Having reached an agreement with existing Air France pilots, the French flag-carrying airline has announced that it is to create a new low-cost airline called ‘Joon’. Without going into too much detail on the technological front, the carrier issued a statement in which it confirmed that Joon is “especially aimed at a young working clientele, the millennials.”
Joon intends to help Air France compete effectively with competition from budget European carriers such as easyJet and Ryanair, and Gulf airlines, including Emirates. To be competitive, Joon’s pilots will be paid 40% less than current Air France pilots. In coming to an agreement with existing pilots, Air France’s CEO, Jean-Marc Janaillac, praised them for their “spirit of responsibility”.
The airline has indicated that: “Joon will not be a low-cost airline as it will offer original products and services that reflect those of Air France,” while also indicating that it will start out providing medium-haul services before breaking into the long-haul market in 2018.
Joon will be based at Paris Charles de Gaulle and is expected to enter into service this autumn and a list of destinations and prices should be released in September. Joon will be run by Jean-Michel Mathieu, who has been involved with the project since the start and has held various positions in sales, digital and revenue management within the Air France-KLM group.
