US Airways completes major liquidity improvement program
|

US Airways has completed a series of transactions with key business partners designed to improve its near-term and future liquidity. The Company will significantly reduce capital expenditures over the next three years, eliminate the need to access aircraft finance markets in 2010 and extend certain debt maturities. These transactions improve projected year-end 2009 liquidity by approximately $150 million and generate, in aggregate, approximately $450 million of projected liquidity improvements by the end of 2010.
The Company’s actions include the deferral of 54 Airbus aircraft previously scheduled for delivery between 2010 and 2012 that are now to be delivered in 2013 and beyond. These deferral arrangements will reduce the Company’s aircraft capital expenditures over the next three years by approximately $2.5 billion, and reduce near- and medium-term obligations to Airbus and others by approximately $132 million. In addition, commencement of US Airways’ Airbus A350 XWB operations, with aircraft deliveries originally scheduled to start in 2015, will now be postponed until 2017. These deferrals will not significantly alter the airline’s capacity plans as aircraft originally scheduled to be replaced will be retained until the rescheduled new aircraft delivery dates.
In addition to the aircraft deferral, US Airways has arranged credit facilities in the amount of $95 million and $180 million of aircraft financing commitments for the 2010 deliveries. Also, the Company has agreed with Barclays to permanently lower the monthly unrestricted cash condition precedent for the advance purchase of frequent flyer miles and defer for 14 months the amortization of $200 million advanced in connection with the previous purchase of miles.

Iberia took delivery of a new A-319 from the Airbus plant in Hamburg, Germany, on February 5th. It is the first aircraft to join the fleet since deliveries were suspended more than a year ago as the company reduced capacity to cope with the global economic slump. Configured to carry up to 141 passengers, it will operate on Iberia’s domestic, European and African routes.

» MTU Aero Engines benefits from V2500 business
For MTU Aero Engines, the 2010 Singapore Airshow proved a profitable event: Just a few days before the event officially opened, the German engine manufacturer had already benefited from a major V2500 engine order placed with International Aero Engines (IAE); now the engine consortium has announced more contracts it received over the course of the trade show. For MTU, which holds an 11-percent share in IAE, these deals translate into sales worth about 65 million euros.

» AAR receives STC for the launch cargo loading system for IAI’S 767-300 conversion program
AAR announced that the FAA and EASA have issued Supplemental Type Certificates (STC) approving the Company’s cargo handling system for the 767-300 airframe. AAR was selected by IAI’s Bedek Aviation Group (IAI) to design the cargo system for the launch of its 767-300 conversion program. IAI installed the AAR cargo system to convert a 767-300 from passenger configuration into a modern and efficient General Market Freighter (GMF) configuration. The system was manufactured at AAR Cargo Systems state-of-the-art facility in Goldsboro, North Carolina.

» GOL selects Rockwell Collins to provide data link system for its Boeing 737 fleet
GOL Airlines has selected Rockwell Collins to provide CMU-900 Communications Management Unit (CMU) for its fleet of Boeing 737NG airplanes. In addition, the airplanes will also be equipped with the company's advanced GLU-925 Multi-Mode Receiver (MMR). Deliveries will begin in early 2010.

» BAE Systems wins engineering contract for Mitsubishi Regional Jet
BAE Systems has signed an agreement with Mitsubishi Aircraft Corporation of Japan to provide design integration and certification services in connection with the propulsion systems for the next-generation Mitsubishi Regional Jet (MRJ) aircraft.
A team from BAE Systems’ Regional Aircraft business at Prestwick in Scotland will provide engineering expertise on a number of work packages for the aircraft which include powerplant, pylon, nacelle, auxiliary power units and fuel systems.
The MRJ aircraft, a 70-90-seat family of twin-engined regional jets, will be powered by Pratt and Whitney PurePower PW1000G engines. First flight is scheduled for 2012, with entry into service planned for 2014. Current customers for the MRJ are All Nippon Airways and Trans States Holdings of the USA.

» Constant Aviation receives EASA certification
Constant Aviation, headquartered at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, has been awarded the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) repair station certification. The certification now authorizes Constant’s Cleveland Facility to perform and sign off maintenance for any European registered aircraft.

» Boeing completes 747-8 Freighter taxi tests
Boeing completed taxi tests on the first 747-8 Freighter. With Chief Pilot Mark Feuerstein at the controls, the airplane reached a top seed of approximately 90 knots (103.5 mph, 166.6 kph). This was the last functional test planned before first flight on Monday February 8th.
