The PW306D is the latest addition to Pratt & Whitney Canada’s successful PW300 engine family. Now Transport Canada Civil Aviation has approved type certification for the turbofan. MTU Aero Engines, Germany’s leading engine manufacturer, has a 25% work share in the PW306D. “This is MTU’s highest stake in any of the engine programs in which we participate. We have been partnering with Pratt & Whitney Canada on most of this engine family since 1985 and are very pleased to have a share also in this, the latest version of the engine,” explained MTU Aero Engines CEO Egon Behle. The PW306D builds on the PW306C and has been developed to power Cessna’s upgraded, new Citation Sovereign business jet, which has just made its first production flight. MTU contributes the complete three-stage low-pressure turbine, the turbine exit case and the mixer. Improvements to the new engine over its predecessor include enhanced aerodynamics, lower fuel consumption and a modified engine control unit. It took a mere two years to go from the start of development in 2011 to type certification.
