Aegean ensures airline’s growth with commitment to purchase 30 A320neos

Aegean, the largest Greek airline, has signed an MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) with Airbus for the purchase of 30 A320neo Family aircraft, an order comprising 20 A320neos and 10 A321neos. It is Aegean’s intention to further increase the size of its fleet of aircraft with the acquisition of a significant number of other A320neo Family aircraft from lessors. At present Aegean operates a fleet of 46 Airbus jets, made up of 37 A320s, 8 A321s and 1 A319.

Commenting on the deal, Eftichios Vassilakis, Vice-Chairman of Aegean Airlines stated: “Aegean’s decision to select the latest generation Airbus A320neo Family follows an intense and exhaustive evaluation to determine the best aircraft for Aegean's growth and long-term success. These aircraft will be key for us to pursue our mission of providing services of high standards for our passengers on short and medium haul services.”

Eric Schulz, Airbus Chief Commercial Officer stated: “We are delighted that Aegean, an all Airbus customer, has chosen the bestselling single-aisle Family, becoming a new operator of the type. The commonality these aircraft offer along with lowest operating costs, longest range and a more spacious cabin make the A320neo Family the best choice for growing airlines such as Aegean.”
The A320neo Family incorporates the very latest technologies, including new-generation engines and Sharklets, which together deliver at least 15 percent fuel savings at delivery and 20 percent by 2020. With some 6,000 orders received from nearly 100 customers, the A320neo Family has captured a roughly 60 percent share of the market.

The A321 is the largest member of the A320 Family and seats between 185 and 240 passengers, depending on cabin configuration. Incorporating the latest engines, aerodynamic advances and cabin innovations, the A321neo can fly up to 4,000 nautical miles (7,400 kilometers) non-stop – further than any other single-aisle airliner.

United Airlines increases service between San Francisco and Auckland

Air New Zealand will begin new nonstop service between Auckland and Chicago, beginning Nov. 30, 2018. The new service announcement deepens the joint venture relationship between Air New Zealand and United Airlines. In addition to the new route announcement, United announced it will extend its seasonal service between San Francisco and Auckland to year-round beginning April 2019.

"We expect the addition of Chicago to our network to be an attractive option for Americans keen to explore New Zealand and Kiwis wanting to visit Chicago or head on to other North American destinations," says Air New Zealand Chief Executive Officer Christopher Luxon. "As well as being great for travelers, this new route is also good news for New Zealand, as we expect it to contribute around US$70m annually to our economy, and we know that more than 50 percent of spending by U.S. visitors is done outside of the main centers. We'll be working alongside our colleagues at United Airlines to grow the route and visitor numbers in both directions."

easyJet Partners with visitBerlin to Complement Berlin Tegel Service Expansion

easyJet has announced it has entered into a long-term partnership with visitBerlin, the official promotional organisation of Germany’s capital city. The intention is to effectively promote tourism to Berlin, both from Germany and also the wider European market. The move comes on top of easyJet’s acquisition of part of the now defunct airBerlin which operated out of Berlin Tegel.

The strategic partnership will see different areas of collaboration, including the creation and spreading of local content to inspire visitors from around the world to visit Berlin and experience its culture, atmosphere and lifestyles. The partnership will generate revenue for visitBerlin through the sale of the Berlin WelcomeCard on board and we will exchange information to continuously develop the network and services.

In 2017 easyJet flew 3.5m international passengers into Berlin, which was more than any other airline, including Lufthansa, while the expansion into Tegel should increase year-on-year visitors to 5.6m.
easyJet will operate 19 daily domestic flights from Tegel, on four routes, to and from Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Munich and Stuttgart, and will introduce 15 new destinations from Tegel, to include Budapest, Madrid. Tel Aviv and Rome, among others.

easyJet is now established as Berlin and Brandenburg’s home-based carrier, with almost 16 million passengers travelling to and from Tegel and Schönefeld airports. Travelers will be able to choose from more than 100 destinations from March onwards and 28 of these destinations are only operated by easyJet.

Commenting on the partnership, Thomas Haagensen, easyJet’s Country Director for Germany, Austria & Switzerland said: “Berlin is such an important destination in the German market and remains popular with our customers throughout the entire network. This first ever strategic partnership with visitBerlin will seek to explore different areas of collaboration in order to show everything Berlin has to offer to the great diversity of easyJet's passengers.”

According to Burkhard Kieker, CEO of visitBerlin: “The engagement by easyJet is great facilitator for the economic and the touristic development of Berlin – which is a great occasion to establish the first strategic partnership between the capital‘s official promotional organisation and an airline. With the hashtag #berlinwelcomesyou we will join forces to promote tourism in Europe to Berlin.”
