The International Air Transport Association has downgraded its 2020 traffic forecast from down 63% to down 66% when compared to 2019 traffic volume on the back of poor August figures that have reflected a weaker-than expected recovery from the effects of the global pandemic.

August revenue passenger kilometers (RPKs) were down 75.3% when compared to August 2019, only a marginal improvement for the July figure of a 79.5% contraction. While domestic markets are outperforming international ones in terms of recovery, August capacity (available seat kilometers or ASKs) was still down 63.8% compared to a year ago, and load factor plunged 27.2 points to an all-time low for August of 58.5%.

IATA identified the key negative turning point in what appeared to be a growing recovery in passenger numbers in August as the period when a number of governments in key areas re-introduced restrictions based on the apparent resurgence of the COVID-19 virus. Whereas the decline in year-on-year growth of global RPKs was expected to have moderated to -55% by December, a much slower improvement is now expected with the month of December forecast to be down 68% on a year ago.

“August’s disastrous traffic performance puts a cap on the industry’s worst-ever summer season. International demand recovery is virtually non-existent and domestic markets in Australia and Japan actually regressed in the face of new outbreaks and travel restrictions. A few months ago, we thought that a full-year fall in demand of -63% compared to 2019 was as bad as it could get. With the dismal peak summer travel period behind us, we have revised our expectations downward to -66%,” said Alexandre de Juniac, IATA’s Director General and CEO.

JSSI Parts & Leasing, a division of Jet Support Services, Inc. (JSSI), announced the appointment of Ben Hockenberg as President and Jim Sellers as Chief Commercial Officer.
|
JSSI Parts & Leasing supports more than 10,000 aircraft maintenance events annually for JSSI customers and leverages JSSI data to offer rapid solutions for aircraft parts and leasing requirements globally.
|
As president, Hockenberg will provide strategic guidance and overall leadership to the organization. Moving to the role of chief commercial officer, Sellers will be responsible for driving the parts trading and aircraft acquisition businesses, including all teardown, part-out and leasing initiatives.

Rex, Australia’s largest independent regional airline, has signed Letters of Intent with two lessors for the lease of six Boeing 737-800 NG aircraft. The first 737 will be delivered on November 1, 2020, with the remaining five aircraft being phased in over the following four months in readiness for the launch of Rex’s domestic jet operations.
|
Rex’s Deputy Chairman, the Hon John Sharp AM, said, “I am pleased to announce that we have selected the Boeing 737-800 NG as the aircraft for our domestic jet operations. These aircraft are well received by passengers and have proven to be very suitable for operations in Australia. Three of these aircraft will be deployed in the first phase of our launch on March 1, 2021, on the Sydney – Melbourne route, with another two aircraft beginning service before Easter. From there, Rex will continue to grow the domestic fleet in line with the return of passenger demand and hopes to see its fleet of 737-800 NGs reach ten by year end.”

Astronics has reported that a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) has been approved for its Max-Viz 1400 Enhanced Vision System (EVS) on DC 10-30 Air Tankers.
|
In cooperation with AVIO dg in Calgary Canada and 10 Tanker, the Astronics Max-Viz EVS was installed in one of 10 Tanker's DC-10 aircraft, representing the first aerial firefighting tanker outfitted with the system. To achieve a supplemental type certificate, the Max-Viz 1400 system successfully underwent flight testing and evaluation during water drops.

The Astronics Max-Viz 1400 has an enhanced vision sensor using a 640x480 pixel resolution long wave infrared thermal imager with electronic zoom, which allows aerial firefighting pilots to see through smoke and readily identify targets and terrain on their incredible missions. Individual pins for control switches allow maximum placement flexibility and multiple horizontal field of view options: 45, 69, and 90 degrees.

Aelis Group has successfully arranged the delivery of one ATR 72-500, MSN711, feighter to fly in cargo configuration in Gabon and the subregion. Aelis has organized the complete transaction, from the purchase of the passenger aircraft ATR 72-500 to its conversion to freighter, the placement with an operating lessor and delivery for cargo operations.

It is a “COVID-19 deal” declared Philippe Lienard, CEO of Aelis, “every action gets more complicated by home office, limitation to travels, and multiple additional burdens. Thank you to all of the actors of this transaction, hard work leads to success."

Embraer announced that the Synthetic Vision Guidance System (SVGS) for the midsize Praetor 500 and super-midsize Praetor 600 business jets was awarded certification by both the civil aviation authority of Brazil, Agência Nacional de Aviação Civil (ANAC), and the civil aviation authority of the United States, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Embraer is the first OEM to receive SVGS certification approval.

The SVGS provides pilots with a dynamic perception of position, trend, and motion, facilitating the transition to utilizing visual references and enabling the safe completion of more missions during inclement weather and lower ceiling approaches. The system allows pilots to operate the aircraft to a decision height of 150 feet (SA-CAT I), as opposed to the regular decision height of 200 feet, increasing operational efficiency and allowing access to several airports during inclement weather and lower ceiling approaches.

Baines Simmons, part of the Safety & Security division at Air Partner, global aviation services group, has partnered with Heart Aerospace, the Research Institutes of Sweden and Electroflight to provide consultancy and training support in the development of a commercially viable all-electric aircraft.
|
Working alongside its three partners Baines Simmons assisted in securing funding for the project as part of the Eureka Initiative, a joint U.K./Swedish government scheme that supports and funds international collaborative research and development projects.
|
The joint project is future facing and comes at a time where scrutiny of the ecological impact of the aviation industry is increasing. The development of all-electric aircraft is a vital next step in minimising air travel’s environmental footprint, and Baines Simmons is working to support a greener future for the industry.

The secured match-funding of €1.6 million will be used to further develop the battery power system of the Heart Aerospace developed ES-19, an all-electric aircraft scheduled to enter commercial service as early as 2026. With a range of 400 km (217 nm) and able to operate from shorter runways (750 metres), the ES-19 will be optimised for short-haul flights, operating from smaller airfields.

The battery power pack being developed by Electroflight is a bespoke, high integrity system designed to be aerospace certifiable for flight. As propulsion technology improves, assisted by the Eureka Initiative funding, this range will continue to extend, with Heart Aerospace predicting that electric aviation has the potential to reduce total aviation carbon dioxide emissions by 43%.

Baines Simmons provided its partners with guidance and support during the successful bidding process and now, having secured the funding, the aviation safety experts will provide consultancy and training to its partners to gain vital approvals and advise on aircraft certification aspects.
|
This assistance will be vital as the ES-19 continues to progress through the testing and prototype phases. With a ground-based prototype currently undergoing testing, a full-scale prototype is scheduled to start flight tests in mid-2024. The aircraft has already secured global interest, even at such a formative stage, with Heart Aerospace citing letters of intent from eight airlines from across North America, Europe and Oceania.

GE Aviation's GE9X engine has been certified by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) authorities, a key milestone in its journey to power the new twin-engine Boeing 777X family.
|
The FAR (Federal Aviation Regulation) Part 33 certification involved nine test engines. This certification achievement culminates GE Aviation’s renewal of its commercial jet engine portfolio, including the GEnx for the Boeing 787 Dreamliner and the CFM LEAP engine. The GE9X test engines completed just under 5,000 hours and 8,000 cycles for certification.

The GE9X engine is designed to achieve 10% lower specific fuel consumption (SFC) compared to the GE90-115B and 5% better SFC than any other engine in its class. The engine will also operate with less smog-causing emissions than any other engine in its class.
