Airbus deliveries on the increase – targets 500 deliveries for 2020

Airbus delivered 57 jets in September, up from 39 in August, bringing its annual total for deliveries to 341, a figure down 40% on the same period in 2019. Many of the jets have been delivered from a parked backlog as the European planemaker continues to operate at a reduced output owning to the dramatic drop in demand because of the COVID-19 crisis. Airbus is still targeting 500 deliveries for the whole of 2020, having posted a record number of 863 delivered jets in 2019.

For the first time in ten years Boeing cut its long-term demand forecasts and while Airbus recorded 379 sold aircraft this year, which equates to 300 net sales after cancelations, this is appreciably better than figures released by Boeing, though Airbus recorded no new sales during the month of September. With multiple 737 MAX order cancelations, the American planemaker had only sold 67 aircraft by the end of August, leaving a negative net balance after cancelations of 378 orders. Between January and August Boeing had managed to deliver just 87 jets.

BAA Training selects L3Harris Technologies to enhance pilot training device mix

L3Harris Technologies has been selected by BAA Training to supply eight new flight training devices (FTDs) to further support BAA Training’s expansion program. L3Harris will install the new FTDs at BAA Training’s locations across Europe and Asia from 2021. The agreement builds on the purchase of full flight simulators (FFS) announced in March 2020.

The eight FTDs are for a combination of A320, 737 MAX and 737 NG aircraft. All devices will be certified to European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) Level 2 and provide a realistic training environment incorporating an enclosed cockpit, visual system and aircraft specific controls.

The devices will support BAA Training with upcoming EASA regulatory changes, which allow for a better mix of training time to be recognized across the device suite. The devices will also feature L3Harris’ latest instructor station that has been redesigned to provide an instructor centric experience, supporting effective training from the start of each session.

Finnair launches comprehensive adjustment and cost-savings program

Finnair is in the middle of the largest crisis in aviation’s history and is facing a challenging financial situation due to the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. To emerge from the crisis the airline has launched a comprehensive adjustment and cost-savings program. The program includes, among many other actions, jointly agreed decreases in personnel costs for several personnel groups. Top management remuneration does not include variable salary elements from 2020-2022.

The rebuild of Finnair will take years, and it requires hard work and dedication. Securing the company’s future demands a long-term contribution from all Finnair employees.

Finnair has prepared a long-term incentive program for those personnel groups with whom it reaches agreements on permanent cost savings that support Finnair's recovery. Finnair has now launched this incentive program, which starts during this year and ends in the third quarter of 2023.

“Finnair is facing an extremely difficult situation due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The company must make painful decisions to emerge from the ongoing crisis which is reshaping our industry. Getting through this phase requires renewal so that Finnair can be competitive in the years to come,” says Jouko Karvinen, Chairman of the Board, Finnair. “Finnair has launched an incentive program for personnel and management, aiming at in due course rewarding the Finnair team for their contributions to Finnair’s future. The targets and key performance indicators we have set for the program are ambitious and in line with the company’s best interests. They are also aligned with the interests of the company’s shareholders.”

The program for personnel will result in an incentive being paid to participating groups if Finnair succeeds in rebuilding its business over the coming three years in line with the set performance indicators and targets. At maximum the incentive pay-out can amount to approximately two months of salary, payable in the third quarter of 2023.

The key performance indicators of the new three-year incentive plan for the Finnair Executive Board are the same as those of the personnel incentive program. Incentives are paid only if Finnair achieves the common targets. Finnair has also issued a stock exchange release with the details of the Executive Board incentive plan.

Finnair has reserved the possibility to offer the incentive program to personnel groups with whom agreements on permanent cost savings have not yet been reached. If such agreements are reached shortly, these personnel groups will take part in the new incentive programme under the same conditions as other participants.

Camfil and CTT Systems partner to incorporate ozone and VOC filtration in humidifiers

Camfil, a manufacturer of premium clean air solutions, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with CTT Systems (CTT), a leader of aircraft humidity control systems, to enter a partnership that opts to adapt Camfil’s air filtration technology for aircraft and the aviation industry, primarily to be incorporated in CTT’s humidifier products.

The cooperation aims to explore innovative air filter applications that improve air quality in the aircraft cabin, where Camfil expertise and leading-edge, air filtration solutions can be applied in cooperation with CTT’s knowledge and footprint in the aviation industry. Primarily, CTT opts to incorporate air filtration in its humidifier products, to further improve air quality for pilots, crew, and passengers. Hereby, CTT can complement existing clean air solutions without adding additional maintenance or overhaul for airlines.

The initial objective is to reduce ozone and/or Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). By integrating filter technology in the pad module that is aligned with the service interval of the pad material, airlines can rip-and-replace the entire pad module.

CTT has a large installed population of humidifiers in the flight deck and crew rests, primarily on Boeing 787 and Airbus A350 aircraft. The pad-filters will be completely interchangeable with the current product line of humidifiers/pads.
