As with many commercial aviation businesses, RECARO Aircraft Seating (Recaro) has been heavily impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, which has been reflected in the company’s 2020 financial results which were released this Thursday where it, earned €295 million in 2020, which was 60% less than 209 revenue.
|
Recaro has also revamped its long-term approach, while robust measures from the company’s global efficiency program, Touch & Go, successfully reduced costs by 18% across all sites and implemented 150 projects to support efficiency. Management teams created extra savings through salary cuts and the implementation of “short-time work” at the Schwaebisch Hall site also reduced the burden on resources.

During 2020, the lightest Recaro economy-class seat to-date, the SL3710, took flight for the first time on TAP Air Portugal and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, while this week it was also revealed the seat was making its North American debut with Frontier Airlines. The carrier is scheduled to take delivery of mixture of 156 A320neo and A321neo aircraft fitted out with 186 and 240 SL3710 seats respectively. Recaro has also entered the regional jet market for the first time and announced KLM Cityhopper as its first regional jet customer where Recaro will be using a novel hybrid layout.

United Airlines is kicking off summer vacation season with a robust May schedule that includes the addition of 26 new nonstop routes between Midwest cities such as Cleveland, Cincinnati and Milwaukee and popular vacation destinations such as Hilton Head, S.C.; Pensacola, Fla.; and Portland, Maine. The airline also plans to resume more than 20 domestic routes and will start new service between Orange County, Calif., and Honolulu.

Internationally, in May United will fly more than 100% of its pre-pandemic schedule to Latin America compared to what it operated in 2019, including more flights to Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America and South America. The airline also plans to resume flights between Chicago and Tokyo Haneda, resume passenger flights between New York/Newark and Milan and Rome, and restart service between Chicago and Amsterdam.

In total, United plans to operate 52% of its overall schedule compared to May 2019, whereas in May 2020 United operated 14% of its overall schedule compared to May 2019.

CargoAi is launching new features to allow freight forwarder to assess and reduce the CO2 emissions generated by their business activities. They can now choose routes and airlines based on their carbon impact and calculate the CO2 emitted from each shipment. Monthly CO2 emissions reports are also available to allow clients to analyse their own impact and monitor improvements.

Freight forwarders who want to take a sustainable approach can now do so thanks to new features from CargoAi. As powerful decision-making and CO2 emission calculation tools, these features are highly sought after by clients at a time when sustainability is playing an increasingly significant role in air cargo.

CargoAi’s unique Flight Search module now gives forwarders access to the CO2 emissions for each airline and route, allowing them to choose their transport solutions accordingly. Also, the free universal Track and Trace system enable any freight forwarder to track their shipment instead of checking with each airline and calculate at the same time the CO2 emission of the shipment. Finally, the monthly emissions report means forwarders can analyse their carbon impact and monitor improvements.

Several months of development work went into building this complex calculation system, with impartiality the primary goal. As a result, CO2 emissions calculations for all airlines are based on the IATA RP1678 methodology, which is approved by the Global Logistics Emissions Council (GLEC). The European standard DIN EN 16258 can also be used.

The Cessna SkyCourier turboprop continues to surpass significant milestones as it begins the certification flight test phase of the program for the high-wing, large utility aircraft. Each major achievement has allowed the members of the flight test program a better understanding of the aircraft’s strength, capability and durability.
|
The fleet of three flight test aircraft has now completed more than 700 flight test hours, and the program continues toward FAA certification and first deliveries later this year. Production final assembly for the SkyCourier begins this month on the company’s east campus in Wichita. State-of-the-art tooling, including high-speed machining, has been developed for the aircraft’s assembly.

The Cessna SkyCourier aircraft is designed and manufactured by Textron Aviation Inc., a Textron company.

GA Telesis has delivered its first 737-800SF (MSN 32903) passenger-to-freighter (P2F) conversion to Ethiopian Airlines. The aircraft was delivered from Aeronautical Engineering's (AEI) authorized conversion center, Commercial Jet, in Miami. A second 737-800 (MSN 28826) contracted with AEI is currently undergoing the P2F conversion, with delivery expected in May 2021.

GA Telesis’ Leasing, Investment, Financing & Trading (LIFT) Group entered the air cargo sector with its first commitment with AEI signed in July 2020, followed by a second option taken in September. Given the remarkable growth of the main deck air cargo market, fueled by the pandemic, LIFT is negotiating additional 737SF slots, amongst slots for other aircraft models to add to its future portfolio.

GKN Aerospace has been awarded a new contract to supply electrical wiring interconnection systems (EWIS) for the Boeing 777X family of aircraft. The agreement adds to GKN Aerospace’s extensive portfolio of Boeing EWIS products, with production due to start in 2024. The contract will be delivered from multiple locations across GKN Aerospace’s extensive global footprint, including Langfang in China, and its new state-of-the-art wiring facility in Pune, India.

GKN Aerospace has supplied EWIS for more than two decades to multiple Boeing aircraft platforms. GKN Aerospace is globally recognized as one of the markets and technology leaders in EWIS products.

AAR a leading aviation services provider to commercial and governments operators, MROs and OEMs worldwide, has reported that its EAGLE Career Pathways program for aircraft maintenance technicians (AMTs) has been recognized by the U.S. Department of Labor’s (DOL) Employment and Training Division as a nationally registered apprenticeship. AAR's program standards were approved by the DOL’s Office of Apprenticeship in Washington, D.C., in February.

In addition, AAR has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the American Association of Port Authority’s (AAPA) ACCELerate Apprenticeships program. The program’s goal is to provide competency-based curriculums, on-the-job training, program development assistance and incentive funding to expand apprenticeship opportunities for careers that drive economic mobility.

Launched in 2019, AAR’s EAGLE Career Pathway program is a partnership of 15 organizations and institutions, including community colleges, high schools and youth centers, which are dedicated to growing the aviation maintenance technician pipeline. These organizations are located near AAR’s four U.S.-based aircraft repair stations in Miami, Oklahoma City, Indianapolis and Rockford, Illinois, and its global headquarters near Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport.
