United Airlines plans to be flying supersonic with Boom by the end of the decade

United Airlines has announced its intention to buy 15 ‘Overture’ ultra-fast jets from Denver-based Boom Supersonic with an option to acquire a further 35 provided that they meet United's safety, operating and sustainability requirements. This would see the return of supersonic trans-Atlantic flights which have been absent since the demise of Concorde in 2003.

The announcement has come less than two weeks since Aerion announced that it was no longer building a supersonic jet after it ran out of funding. One major concern for environmentalists has been the inability for supersonic aviation to meet greenhouse gas emission targets, with United having pledged to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 100% by 2050. However, the carrier confirmed that the Boom Overture jet will operate using 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) by the time it enters into service, projected for 2029.

The Overture will initially provide business-class flights on an aircraft with between 65 and 88 seats, reducing current transatlantic flight times in half to approximately three and a half hours. United will also need to seek approval from the Federal Aviation Administration for supersonic flight over land, while airports will likely require that the jet be no noisier than current subsonic jets.

Wright International launches new identity

Wright International has launched a new identity representing decades of worldwide aircraft repair, maintenance, and overhaul (MRO) experience. The updated brand and new website design are significant in highlighting the final stages in the process of the company’s integration as part of FL Technics: a global provider of MRO services and a family member of the Avia Solutions Group.

In the latter stages of 2020, Canadian-based Wright International entered the global MRO market by joining forces as part of the FL Technics company. GKN Aerospace delivers first wings, empennage and wiring for all-electric Alice

GKN Aerospace has reached an important milestone in its collaboration with Eviation (U.S.A.) by delivering the first fully integrated wings, empennage, and EWIS for the Alice all-electric aircraft.  The wings and empennage feature advanced composite technology, and are the first delivered by GKN Aerospace as fully integrated structures.

Alice is taking advantage of GKN Aerospace’s multi-technology specialist skills in airframe, structures, and EWIS from right across the business. The build and assembly have been supported with products manufactured in Cowes, Filton, Western Approach and Hoogerheide (NL). Final assembly and integration were completed at the brand new £32 million Global Technology Center in Bristol.

GKN Aerospace and Eviation announced the collaboration agreement covering the design and manufacture of wings, empennage, and electrical wiring interconnection systems (EWIS) in May 2020. The rapid development and delivery showcase GKN Aerospace’s ability to support the faster time-to-market of electrical aircraft. Alice is preparing for its first flight later this year and will fly nine passengers for up to 440 nautical miles.

Bristow invests in next generation of pilots with latest sponsored U.K. cadet program

Bristow Group is investing in the next generation of offshore helicopter pilots with its latest sponsored U.K. cadet program in partnership with Helicentre Aviation, designed to attract, train, and retain the professional pilots of the future.

Applications are now open for the program, which will see four cadets chosen through a rigorous joint selection process. Successful applicants’ training, from ab-initio to commercial pilot on an Integrated CPL(H) course, ultimately obtaining a Multi-Engine Instrument Rating, will be fully funded by Bristow.

Established in 2018, the program provides a pathway to enable cadets to graduate and transition from training straight into employment with Bristow, where they will gain type ratings and begin as First Officers with the world’s largest helicopter operator. Bristow is the only North Sea helicopter operator in the U.K. that continues to sponsor the future helicopter pilot workforce through its sponsored cadet program.

During training, the cadets will also have access to Bristow’s flight simulator hall at Dyce, Aberdeen. The purpose-built center hosts three full-size helicopter simulators which use advanced, motion-compensation technology, combined with realistic visuals to replicate the experience of flying Leonardo AW189, Sikorsky S-92 and S-76 aircraft.

Air traffic control students from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia graduate in New Zealand

The eighth cohort of General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) students from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has graduated from air traffic control (ATC) training with Airways International (Airways), 11 years after the first group to arrive in New Zealand completed their training.

GACA and Airways celebrated this milestone on Thursday June 3, as 34 students attended their graduation ceremony in Palmerston North following two years of study in New Zealand. Almost 200 students from Saudi Arabia have completed ATC training with Airways since the first cohort landed in New Zealand in 2009.

The graduates included four female students – the first Saudi Arabian females to train as air traffic controllers outside their own country. Saudi Air Navigation Services (SANS) will employ the graduates on their return to Saudi Arabia and are prioritizing hiring women in the ATC profession, with the aim to extend female employment and empowerment. The organisation is offering theoretical and practical ATC training to 80 women per year to prepare them for work in the ATC sector – the first cohort of female ATCs started work in Jeddah in March 2019.
