During 2Q21, Switzerland’s Helvetic Airways took delivery the first of four new E195-E2 aircraft, having ordered 12 E-Jets E2s to support its fleet renewal initiative: eight E190-E2s (already in service) and four E195-E2s (converted from the original E190-E2 order). The airline also holds purchase rights for a further 12 aircraft.

In the executive aviation segment, during 2Q21, Embraer delivered its 600th Phenom 300 to Superior Capital Holdings in Arkansas. Embraer also delivered the first limited-edition Phenom 300E as part of the Duet collaboration with Porsche to an undisclosed customer in Florida. Collins Aerospace launches PerigonTM offering to support future flight computing requirements

Collins Aerospace has launched its PerigonTM computer, available for a broad range of commercial and defense platforms. With advanced computing power, open-system architecture and flexible configurability, PerigonTM is designed to enable future flight control and vehicle management needs.

At the 2018 Farnborough International Air Show, Collins announced the development of a next-gen vehicle management computer designed to support autonomous flight. Since then, Collins has built a working prototype and is currently performing detailed development and integration testing, with an eye toward qualification testing in 2022. The company has also branded the computer as PerigonTM, a mathematical term for a 360-degree angle. Collins chose the name to represent the many capabilities PerigonTM can offer customers, the holistic view of systems and inputs it provides, and its enhanced flexibility.

PerigonTM will have the ability to provide 20 times the processing power of Collins’ existing flight control computers, thousands of which are currently in service on a multitude of platforms worldwide. Combined with its open-system design, PerigonTM’s high computing power will allow customers to load it with a variety of complex software applications, including autonomous and fly-by-wire flight control, cybersecurity, vehicle management and predictive health maintenance. In addition, capabilities that previously required multiple computers across a platform may now be able to be performed by PerigonTM alone, thanks to its enhanced processing power. This, in turn, could enable customers to reduce the number of computers onboard and enjoy space, weight and cost savings as a result.

Depending on the customer’s needs, PerigonTM can be configured as simplex, duplex or triplex redundant. It will be FAA certifiable to facilitate aircraft level certification, available for commercial or military rotary and fixed wing platforms.

Alaska Airlines and AAR team up to create Flow Through program for tomorrow’s aviation maintenance technicians

The nation’s airlines rely on professional maintenance technicians to ensure airplanes safely and compliantly travel across the country, but demand for qualified airline maintenance technicians (AMT) will outpace supply as early as 2022. Over the next 20 years, Boeing forecasts 739,000 technicians are needed globally, and 192,000 are needed in North America alone.

To fill these highly skilled positions, Alaska Airlines is teaming up with AAR CORP., a leading provider of aviation maintenance services, to create a pipeline for qualified airline maintenance technicians for the Seattle-based airline. The Flow Through program is the first of its kind between an airline and an aviation services provider to focus on education and career training and recruit new workers from diverse backgrounds.

Under the program, applicants complete their training and feed into a role at an AAR maintenance facility. If the applicant is in good standing and has completed three years with AAR as an aircraft technician, they qualify to apply to a career opening at Alaska and are guaranteed an interview. Alaska has 14 maintenance-staffed bases across its network.

“The Aviation Maintenance Technician shortage continues to grow as so many are retiring or leaving the business,” said Stan Mayer, general manager at AAR Airframe Maintenance in Oklahoma City, OK. “We believe the Alaska Airlines Flow Through agreement will help to attract new and upcoming technicians, and with our 19-year relationship, it only makes sense to help each other.”
