The major provider of broadband connectivity products for aviation, Gogo, has announced its intention to create a contiguous U.S. and Canada air-to-ground (ATG) network which will be designed for use by business aviation aircraft, commercial regional jets and smaller mainline jets. It is anticipated the network will be operational for business and commercial aviation by 2021.

Oakleigh Thorne, CEO of Gogo, commented that: "We expect to launch Gogo 5G at the same time as the terrestrial telecommunications companies are deploying the same generation of technology on the ground – a first in the inflight connectivity industry. Gogo 5G is the next step in our technology evolution and is expected to deliver an unparalleled user experience, pairing high
performance with low latency and network-wide redundancy."

The 5G network will be built on Gogo’s existing infrastructure of over 250 towers, using unlicensed spectrum in the 2.4GHz range, along with a proprietary modem and advanced beamforming technology. Gogo's 5G infrastructure will support all spectrum types (licensed, shared, unlicensed) and bands (mid, high, low), which will enable Gogo to take advantage of new advances in technology as and when they have been developed. In a similar way in which wireless carriers provide redundancy across their networks, Gogo will continue to employ its 3G and 4G networks throughout the continental U.S. and in Canada which can be used as backup to the 5G network when needed.

Compared to satellite technologies, ground-based network technologies normally deliver certain operational advantages such as lower cost of operation and lower latency. Gogo will provide straightforward upgrade routes to 5G connectivity for existing Gogo air-to-ground customers.

The remarkable growth in Munich Airport's network of intercontinental destinations continues. The segment posted strong gains to start the 2019 operating year, with a 10.5% increase in total passengers from January to April 2019. In the summer of 2019, 22 airlines will offer 342 departures per week to 41 intercontinental destinations in 22 countries.
|
Several new routes will be launched in June. After the successful rollout of its new service to Charlotte, North Carolina, at the end of March, American Airlines will provide a connection between Munich and the metropolitan area of Dallas / Fort Worth, Texas, starting on June 7, 2019. With the famed Dallas Arts District and more restaurants per capita than New York City, it's a dream
destination for culture lovers.

Chicago –- the third-largest city in the USA – will be served by three daily flights from the beginning of June, with two daily departures by Lufthansa and one by United Airlines. In total, 133 flights will depart from Munich for the USA every week this summer, serving 13 different destinations.

Both Lufthansa and Thai Airways will be operating daily flights to the Thai capital of Bangkok as of June 3, 2019. Also starting in June, passengers can choose between two daily departures to the megacity of Singapore, either with Lufthansa or Singapore Airlines. With Lufthansa now flying every day to Osaka and increasing the frequency of its Seoul-Incheon route to a daily departure,
Munich is also experiencing significant growth in services to and from Asia.

In addition, Saudia is adding new flights to Jeddah, and will depart from Munich for both Jeddah and Riyadh, the Saudi capital, three times per week.

StandardAero recently completed the correlation process for its newly upgraded Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-68 test cell at its Summerside, PEI facility in Canada. The company is now able to complete pass-off testing for PT6A-68 series engines overhauled at the Summerside facility, for customers in Canada, the United States and elsewhere.

StandardAero has provided full service support for the PT6A-68 since 2013, previously from its Winnipeg, MB location. Work on the engine was transferred to the Summerside facility as part of the company’s Center of Excellence (COE) activity, announced in May 2018. The facility, located in Slemon Park adjacent to Summerside Airport, has recently expanded its shop floor area by 30% to 130,000 sq. ft., while expanding its workforce with the hiring of 80 additional employees.

The 1,250 to 1,600 shp class PT6A-68 series powers a number of high performance training aircraft.

Hi Fly’s ‘Turn the Tide on Plastic’ Airbus A330 continues to circumnavigate the globe on its mission to raise public awareness of plastic pollution in the world’s oceans.
|
With close to 20 months now decorated in the livery of the campaign with the 'Turn the Tide' message boldly displayed on its fuselage, the aircraft has already travelled to all five continents, taken more than 600 flights and landed in over 60 destinations worldwide.
|
In Europe, the now famous airliner has visited the UK, France, Belgium, Portugal, Spain, Germany, Italy, Bulgaria and Turkey.
|
While in Africa, Tunisia, Morocco, Nigeria, Ruanda, Madagascar, Guinea, the Congo, Senegal, Kenya, and Mauritius have all welcomed Hi Fly’s themed Airbus A330, as have some of the world’s most spectacular destinations such as Reunion Island, the Dominican Republic, French
Polynesia, Cuba and Jamaica.

On the American continents: the USA, Canada and Brazil, Argentina, Panama, Venezuela and Guyana have also received a visit from the plane, while in Asia, travellers in India, China, Thailand,
Tajikistan, Afghanistan and Russia, may well have seen the painted jet as it carried its message on sustainability to the four corners of the earth.

The Middle Eastern nations of Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Iraq have also been visited, but the region that has seen the most of the inspiring jetliner was Australasia, where it flew between Australia
and New Zealand.

The Hi Fly Airbus was decorated in its ‘Turn the Tide on Plastic’ livery after its principal sustainability partner the Mirpuri Foundation became also the Principal Sustainability partner of the Volvo Ocean Race and founding partner of Team Turn The Tide on Plastic, in the 2017-18 edition of the race.

Hi Fly has announced its plan to be the first airline to be completely ‘single-use plastic-free’ by the end of this year.

GDC Engineering (GDC), an Aircraft Engineering and Certification services provider and Joramco, the Amman based MRO, have signed a Letter of Intent (LOI).
|
Under the LOI, GDC and Joramco will work to form a strategic, long-term partnership to pursue aircraft major and minor modifications and repair opportunities for commercial aircraft throughout the region, under GDC EASA Design Organization Approval.
|
GDC will provide engineering and Part 21J certification services while Joramco will provide Engineering, labor, equipment and facilities required to perform modifications and repair services in accordance with EASA & FAA regulations at its facility in Amman-Jordan.
|
The ever increasing market provides an opportunity for Joramco to expand its already comprehensive MRO capabilities to aircraft beyond their current customer base while also allowing GDC to expand its offerings for modification services, including cabin refurbishments and reconfigurations, along with connectivity and IFE upgrades, including GDC’s new smart plane offering.

Deutsche Telekom, the integrated telecommunications company and DFS, the German air navigation service provider, have announced the founding of their joint venture Droniq on Wednesday, May 29. Droniq provides a technical platform to track drones, enabling drone flights beyond the visual line of sight of the pilot in the future.

DFS and Deutsche Telekom have developed a technology that uses the mobile communications network to track unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), commonly known as drones. This puts in place one of the central preconditions to be able to safely operate drones across larger distances, and not just in close vicinity to the pilot. Delivering this precondition is a necessary step for the economic operation of unmanned aircraft systems. "Our technology finally makes it possible to fully exploit the potential offered by drones operated in a professional setting. With Droniq, we have combined the aviation expertise of DFS with Deutsche Telekom's competence in mobile communications," said Tim Höttges, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Deutsche Telekom AG.

The core of the product offering is a UAS Traffic Management System (UTM). This system processes the position data of drones and displays them together with the tracking data of manned aircraft. In this way, a complete air situation display is created. The UTM system also offers additional functions for the safe operation of drones in German airspace, including registration, mission planning and an automated process for obtaining any permissions required for a particular mission. "Droniq offers an entry into the commercial operation of unmanned aircraft systems, especially for drone flights beyond the visual line of sight. That is why we are introducing the first operational UTM system in Germany on the market to integrate drones safely and fairly into airspace," said Klaus-Dieter Scheurle, CEO of DFS.

Honeywell has signed a new maintenance agreement with the UAE’s Advanced Military Maintenance Repair Overhaul Center – AMMROC. The contract will see the firms work together to enhance the repair and maintenance options available to AMMROC’s key customer the UAE Air Force and its fleet of more than 100 aircraft.
|
This new, long-term agreement is designed to ensure AMMROC and Honeywell provide a high standard of maintenance, overhaul and repair services to the UAE Air Force. It covers the upkeep of Honeywell components used on board the various aircraft types within the UAE Air Force’s extensive fleet.
|
Abu Dhabi based AMMROC was launched in 2010 and is a joint venture of Emirates Defence Industries Company (EDIC), Lockheed Martin Corporation and Sikorsky Aerospace Services. The new collaboration with Honeywell will extend the working relationship between the companies for many years to come.

Air France and KLM have signed a new code-share agreement with Atlantic Airways for flights linking Paris and Amsterdam to Vágar airport in the Faroe Islands, via Copenhagen, Billund, Bergen, Edinburgh and Reykjavik.
|
With this new partnership, effective July 1, 2019, Air France and KLM customers will be able to benefit from more travel opportunities between the Faroes and Paris and Amsterdam with a single air ticket and check-in. In addition, they will be able to enjoy FlyingBlue benefits on all these flights.
|
Moreover, from July 1, 2019, customers will benefit from the launch of a new non-stop route offered by Atlantic Airways using AF flight codes between Vágar airport in the Faroe Islands and Paris-Charles de Gaulle airport, with three flights weekly.

The Freight division at global aviation services group Air Partner has delivered a second year of record results. As announced in Air Partner’s recent full year results for the year ended 31 January 2019, Freight gross profit for the year was up 45.3% to £4.9 million, accounting for 13.8% of the group’s overall gross profit.
|
Over the course of the last financial year, the group invested in people across its regional offices, expanded its team in Turkey and established a new team in the US, in addition to winning sizeable
mandates from a variety of new and existing clients. Cargo work has been carried out across a range of sectors, including automotive, aid, aerospace and energy, with customer requirements ranging from the transportation of a small box via Air Partner’s growing on-board courier
service to chartering the largest aircraft in the world, the An-225.

The introduction of a Freight offering in Fort Lauderdale has proven particularly successful, helping to push Freight gross profit and customer numbers to their highest ever level. The team there had a very busy year working on numerous projects, including the co-ordination of 30 charters carrying humanitarian aid to Guam and Saipan during the typhoon season.
|
Outside of the US, the Turkey office arranged the transportation of 500 tonnes of construction materials to West Africa and the UK benefited from its work supporting airlines in their aircraft on ground (AOG) recovery, as well as government flying. The German office also continued to see high levels of activity from the automotive sector and delivered its 11th consecutive year of growth.

Furthermore, Air Partner opened two new offices in Singapore and Houston in early 2019, both of which offer Freight services, thereby broadening the division’s geographic reach even further.
