The beleaguered Boeing 737 MAX program which has seen aircraft grounded worldwide since a second fatal crash in a few months has received a major boost from British Airways’ parent company IAG. Announcing the signing of a Letter of Intent (LoI) at the Parish Air Show, Willie
Walsh, IAG Chief Executive commented: “We have every confidence in Boeing and
expect that the aircraft will make a successful return to service in the coming
months having received approval from the regulators.”

While IAG has long been operating the Boeing 747 and 777 twin-aisle jets, it’s single-aisle fleet used by British Airways, Aer Lingus, Iberia and Vueling, together with its low-cost
transatlantic startup LEVEL has been mainly made up of the Airbus A320 family
of jets. Walsh has indicated he now wants to diversify IAG’s future fleet which
will include both the 737 MAX and A320neo. IAG’s deal, though not yet finalized
with Boeing, is for a mix of the 737 MAX 8 and Max 10 variants, the latter yet
to enter into service.

Boeing has confirmed that the deal with IAG is worth just over US$24 billion at list prices. However, according to aircraft valuation firm Avitas’ data, the real value of the planes after standard
discounts in the industry is nearer US$11 billion. With current problems surrounding the MAX program, there is every likelihood that IAG will havenegotiated a discount much larger than standard.

Regional aircraft leasing specialist NAC and ATR, have signed a Letter of Intent for 35 firm ATR -600s, with options for a further 35 and purchase rights for another 35.
|
Deliveries of the initial 35 aircraft will begin in 2020 and run up to 2025; the delivery schedule is optimised to ensure that market demand is best satisfied over the five-year period. This new deal cements a very successful and longstanding collaboration between NAC and ATR. Since 2010, over 100 speculative ATR aircraft orders were turned into deliveries to NAC.

Anko van der Werff, has been appointed by the Board of Directors of Avianca Holdings as the new president of the company. Van der Werff is an expert in the airline industry, with extensive international experience in companies such as Qatar and Aeromexico. His last position was in the Aeromexico Group, where for five years he served as Executive Vice President Commercial.

International Airlines Group (IAG) has selected the A321XLR to expand its fleet of highly efficient single aisles with a firm order for 14 aircraft. Of these, eight are destined for Iberia and six for Aer Lingus.
|
AirAsia will upsize its future Airbus single aisle fleet, converting 253 orders for the A320neo to the larger A321neo version. The change will enable the airline to offer higher capacity in response to ongoing strong demand across its network. AirAsia becomes the world’s largest customer for the A321neo.

Cebu Pacific (CEB), a Low Cost Carrier based in the Philippines, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for 31 Airbus aircraft, comprising 16 A330neo, 10 A321XLR and 5 A320neo. Cebu Pacific’s A330neo aircraft will be a higher capacity version of the A330-900, with 460 seats in single class configuration. The airline also becomes one of the launch airlines for the A321XLR, which will be able to fly nonstop from the Philippines to destinations as far afield as India and Australia.

Saudi Arabian Airlines, the national flag carrier of Saudi Arabia, has decided to expand its existing A320neo Family order from 35 to as many as 100 NEO aircraft including 35 options. The additional firm order takes SAUDIA’s order of A320neo Family aircraft to 65 of which 15 are A321XLRs.

Personal Airline Exchange (PAX) has placed an order for 50 Ampaire Electric EEL commuter aircraft, with options for 50 additional electrified planes. PAX also intends to immediately acquire two upgraded aircraft from Ampaire to kickstart initial operations prior to hybrid conversion.
|
Ampaire is electrifying trusted, certified aircraft for customers like PAX to enable rapid market entry and transformational economics for operators. “Ampaire’s Electric EEL pre-production prototype is flying right now and performing beautifully,” said Ampaire’s CEO Kevin Noertker, “We look forward to operators being able to share the thrill of flying electric.”

Boeing and Air Lease Corporation have announced a commitment during the Paris Air Show to purchase five 787-9 Dreamliners, valued at $1.5 billion at list prices.
|
"Demand for reliable, versatile, and fuel-efficient airplanes is at an all-time high," said Steven Udvar-Házy, Executive Chairman of Air Lease Corporation. "These five Boeing 787-9 aircraft are required by our airline customers to satisfy strong ALC lease placements of the 787."

Korean Air announced at the Paris Air Show that it plans to add 30 new 787 Dreamliner airplanes to its fleet, with a commitment to purchase 10 new 787-10s and 10 additional 787-9 airplanes. As part of this agreement, Korean Air will also lease 10 787-10s from ALC.
|
The airline, one of the largest transpacific carriers in Asia with 16 non-stop routes to North America, will introduce the larger 787-10 to complement its long-haul fleet of 787-9 and 777 airplanes.

Satair and Crane Aerospace & Electronics have signed an agreement covering the distribution of Crane Aerospace & Electronics’ Tyre Pressure Indicating System (TPIS) for the A320neo and A330neo aircraft families.
|
Using Crane Aerospace & Electronics’ SmartStem® passive, wireless technology, these TPIS systems will improve operator maintenance cost by reducing the time required for daily tire pressure checks while delivering a significant improvement to reliability and accuracy and helping ensure safe operations in all conditions. Certified as standard line fit on all A330neos earlier this year, a similar system is planned for certification on the A320neo in 2020. In addition, both systems will be available for retrofit to lower the maintenance cost on exisiting aircraft.

The agreement marks an evolution in the relationship between Satair and Crane Aerospace & Electronics, who signed their first agreement in 2015 covering the distribution of a new Landing Gear Control Interface Unit for the A320program family.

Avia Solutions Group, a global multipurpose aviation holding, has entered into an agreement to acquire 100 per cent of the shareholding in UK-headquartered Chapman Freeborn Group - a worldwide market leader for aircraft charter solutions. The acquisition agreement was signed in London, United Kingdom on June 14, 2019.
|
The addition of Chapman Freeborn’s worldwide businesses will bolster current business lines portfolio of Avia Solutions Group - a global holding company with 42 subsidiaries engaged in aircraft maintenance, pilot training, ground handling and fuelling, aviation IT solutions and business aviation.
|
As part of the Avia Solutions Group, Chapman Freeborn will maintain its existing product portfolio and continue to operate under the group’s existing brands - including subsidiaries Chapman Freeborn Airchartering, Chapman Freeborn OBC, Intradco Cargo Services, Logik Logistics, Magma Aviation, and Wings 24.

The consolidated revenues of the two entities were €800 million for 2018 and are forecasted to reach €1 billion in 2019. After the acquisition is completed, subject to customary approvals, Avia Solutions Group will own 66 companies in 26 countries worldwide, with approximately 3300 professionals in total.

At the second day of the International Paris Air Show, Amazon has announced a partnership with GE Capital Aviation Services (GECAS) to lease an additional fifteen Boeing 737-800 cargo aircraft.
|
These fifteen aircraft will be in addition to the five Boeing 737-800’s already leased from GECAS and announced earlier this year. The aircraft will fly in the United States out of the more than 20 air gateways in the Amazon Air network.
|
“These new aircraft create additional capacity for Amazon Air, building on the investment in our Prime Free One-Day program,” said Dave Clark, Senior Vice President of Worldwide Operations at Amazon. “By 2021, Amazon Air will have a portfolio of 70 aircraft flying in our dedicated air network.”

Embraer Defense & Security and ELTA Systems (ELTA), a subsidiary of Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), have signed a Strategic Cooperation Agreement at the Paris Air Show, to introduce the P600 AEW (Airborne Early Warning). Designed to compete in a new segment of the AEW market, this next generation aircraft is based on the advanced super midsize platform of the Embraer Praetor 600 business jet. The primary sensor of the P600 AEW is the IAI/ELTA 4th generation Digital Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar with integrated IFF capabilities.

In this cooperation, Embraer Defense & Security is to provide the air platform, ground support, communications systems and aircraft integration while ELTA is to provide the AEW radar, SIGINT (Signals Intelligence) and other electronic systems and system integration.

Private company Bestfly will take delivery of two ATR 72-600s from lessor Acia Aero to operate corporate and charter services throughout Angola. ATR will also provide maintenance and training services to Bestfly.

ATR’s Market Forecast sees a demand for 300 new turboprops over the next 20 years for the Africa and Middle-East region. Regional aviation provides essential connectivity around the world. A 10% increase in regional flights generates additional increases of 5% in tourism, 6% in regional GDP and 8% foreign direct investment. Turboprops are key in connecting communities around the world: 36% of all commercial airports rely exclusively on turboprops and 50% rely, also exclusively, on
regional aircraft.

Aergo Capital has acquired one Airbus A321-200 aircraft (MSN 4461) from AviaAM Leasing (Lithuania). The aircraft is subject to an operating lease with SmartLynx (Lithuania). The Aergo Capital’s owned and managed fleet now stands at 52 aircraft.

Avolon, the international aircraft leasing company, announces an order for 140 LEAP-1A engines from CFM International to power 70 Airbus A320neo family aircraft in its order book. The order is valued at US$2 billion at list prices.
|
Avolon has been a customer of CFM International since its launch in 2010 and today owns a fleet of over 290 CFM-powered aircraft.
|
Avolon has placed orders for a total of 240 Airbus A320neo family aircraft 42 of which are delivered. Following this announcement CFM LEAP-1A engines will power 105 of these aircraft.
|
This order represents Avolon’s largest ever engine order to date, and one of CFM’s biggest ever engine transactions with a lessor for the LEAP engine.
|

Watkins has served as part of the Kellstrom Aerospace team for three years prior to his
promotion.
