In an internal memo seen by Reuters news agency, Cathay Pacific is in the process of instigating cost-cutting measures to counteract the slump in demand from mainland China as well as the general lack of passenger numbers wishing to travel to the former British colony as a consequence of the civil unrest Hong Kong is currently experiencing.
|
The flag-carrying airline has been hit harder than most major corporations operating in Hong Kong; passenger numbers for this August were 11.3 percent lower than for August 2018. According to the memo issued by the new Chief Executive, Augustus Tang, executives should examine all spending with a focus on cost cutting. In addition, Tang made it clear that there would be no additional hiring of staff to replace departing employees in non-flying positions unless approval is given by the spending control committee.

Cathay Pacific had only just returned to profitability for the January-June period since 2016 after the successful implementation of a three-year turnaround plan and had predicted that the second half of the year should be even better owing to seasonality. Jefferies analyst Andrew Lee has predicted the airline could swing to a US$124.1 million loss for the second half of the year. The carrier has also suffered from a reasonable degree of internal turmoil at the top after former CEO Rupert Hogg unexpectedly quit last month, while Chairman John Slosar resigned last week.

Fiji Airways’ first A350 XWB has rolled out of the Airbus paint shop in Toulouse featuring the airline’s signature livery. The aircraft, an A350-900 leased from Dubai Aerospace Enterprises, will be the first of its type to be operated by an airline in the South-Pacific region.
|
The aircraft will now proceed to the final phase of the assembly process, with the installation of engines followed by ground and flight tests, before delivery to Fiji Airways in Q4.
|
The aircraft will be configured with 33 full lie-flat Business Class and 301 Economy Class seats. The aircraft will be deployed to enhance existing long-haul services from Fiji to Australia and the U.S., and to provide the opportunity to open additional routes.

Embraer has delivered its first E195-E2, the biggest of the three members of the E-Jets E2 family of commercial aircraft. The recipients are AerCap, the aircraft leasing company and Azul Linhas Aéreas Brasileiras S.A.
|
Azul is the global launch operator for the E195-E2 and has placed firm orders for 51 of the type. The airline will receive another five aircraft in 2019.

Hawaiian Airlines has welcomed more than one million guests in August 2019, an increase of 4.0% over the same period last year. Total traffic increased 2.8% on a decrease of 1.9% in capacity compared to August 2018. Load factor increased 4.0 points year-over-year to 88.4%.

Magnetic MRO, a global provider of Total Technical Care for aircraft operators and lessors, has announced the launch of its Representative Office in the capital of Malaysia Kuala Lumpur. The company’s new office will focus on developing new customers and partners in South East Asia.

The Kuala Lumpur-based team will focus on the introduction of Magnetic MRO services in the local market by developing Technical Training, Engineering and DOA solutions for Malay, Indonesian, Singaporean, Thai, Vietnamese and other aircraft operators and maintenance organizations in the region. In addition, Magnetic MRO will provide local airlines, MROs and other market players with scheduled and AOG aircraft spare parts supply.

Joramco, the Amman-based MRO and ICBC Aviation Leasing, a leading leasing company based in China, have signed a heavy maintenance agreement. Joramco will perform a redelivery check including a full paint livery for one A330 aircraft of ICBC's fleet.

Strategically located at a free zone area in Queen Alia International Airport in Amman-Jordan, Joramco’s facility includes 5 hangars that can accommodate up to 15 aircraft. Joramco is certified by a number of international regulatory authorities including the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Jordan’s Civil Aviation
Regulatory Commission (JCARC).

Air Canada will upgrade its non-stop flights from Ottawa to London-Heathrow to operate the daily service with its state-of-the-art Boeing 787 Dreamliner.
|
Beginning next spring, customers travelling between Ottawa and London-Heathrow will have the option to fly in Air Canada's Signature cabin, featuring fully lie-flat suites, as well as the added choice of a Premium Economy cabin.
|
The 255-seat Boeing 787-8, configured in three cabins of service, will be dedicated year-round to the route beginning March 29, 2020. It will replace a 211-seat Boeing 767-300ER with two cabins of service.
|
Air Canada also announced that it is suspending its summer seasonal, Ottawa-Frankfurt service. The last flight on this route will be operated on October 24, 2019. Customers travelling to Europe from Ottawa next summer will have an additional option to fly to Frankfurt on a new seasonal service provided by its Star Alliance partner Lufthansa, which will begin operating on May 16th, 2020 and end October 24, 2020.

AeroCentury , an independent aircraft leasing company, has sold one of its Saab 340BPlus aircraft, MSN 449 to K.M.R. Aviation Services for operation by TAG Airlines in Guatemala. The aircraft was recently delivered to the operator in Guatemala City.

Delta Cargo has appointed Rob Walpole as Vice President – Cargo Operations and Logistics. This new position, reporting to Shawn Cole, will see Walpole lead Delta Cargo’s global operations and Delta Logistics Control Center teams.

Walpole comes to Delta Cargo from DP World, a Dubai-based global port operator, where he served as Chief Operating Officer – Global Logistics and Supply Chain. He also served as Chief Executive Officer at Schenker, an integrated logistics service provider.
