At a gathering of members of the Association of Asia Pacific Airlines at Kuala Lumpur on Monday November 25, assembly passed a number of resolutions, including those on the environment, infrastructure, slots, passenger facilitation, and taxation. “The emergence of Asia as a powerhouse driving the global economy during the 21st century naturally creates a sense of optimism for the region’s dynamic air transport industry in the long term,” said Andrew Herdman, AAPA Director General. “However, success cannot be automatically assured without robust efforts to support carriers, who continue to face an ever-increasing number of challenges to achieving strategic development and growth. Given the significant contribution that air transport makes towards wider economic and social development, governments need to adopt a much more positive attitude towards the industry and work meaningfully towards removing obstacles that hinder the sustainable growth of the industry.”

With regard to aviation infrastructure, the Asia Pacific region recognises that travel demand is projected to more than double over the next two decades. As a consequence, considerable investment has to be made in airport and air traffic management (ATM) infrastructure development and, as the AAPA states: “to collaborate beyond national borders and commit to the development and implementation of enhanced Asia Pacific air traffic flow management systems.”

Snapshots of the Assembly’s other resolutions include, for the environment: “AAPA calls on governments and operators to work together towards the effective implementation of CORSIA in a way that is fair and equitable, avoids competitive market distortion, and recognizes the interests of developed and developing nations.” In relation to cybersecurity: “As such, AAPA urges governments, industry and other stakeholders to establish a global and regional approach to cybersecurity built on the basis of trust and transparency, and to work together to enhance cyber threat awareness, promote cybersecurity culture, and strengthen cyber resilience.” Regarding air travel accessibility: “AAPA calls on governments to work closely with other aviation stakeholders towards a shared long-term vision of harmonised international practices on the facilitation of passengers with disabilities, with the aim of achieving a more inclusive air transport system.” In relation to slots: “AAPA calls on governments and slot coordinators to manage the allocation of slots in an independent, transparent, fair and non-discriminatory manner in line with ICAO guidance and established international standards and procedures such as the Worldwide Airport Slots Guidelines,” while finally, on taxation: “AAPA renews its call on governments to refrain from increasing the burden of aviation levies in any form on international air travellers.”

Rolls-Royce has secured a five-year MissionCare™ contract valued at US$1.2 billion to maintain AE 1107C engines on U.S. Marine Corps, Navy and Air Force V-22 aircraft.
|
Rolls-Royce has delivered nearly 1,000 AE 1107C engines to power the fleet of V-22 aircraft in operation around the world. The total fleet of more than 375 MV-22s and CV-22s in service recently topped 500,000 flight hours – or 1 million engine hours on the twin-engine aircraft.

Under the Rolls-Royce MissionCare contract, the company will be responsible for all aspects of propulsion system support, on a Power by the Hour™ basis.
|
Rolls-Royce AE 1107C engines are assembled in Indianapolis, in the company’s largest facility in the U.S. The engines are part of the AE engine family, which has a proven record of reliable service in military and civilian aircraft. The AE engine fleet has topped 77 million hours of dependable service around the world.
|
The Rolls-Royce facilities in Indianapolis are nearing completion of a US$600 million investment to modernize and upgrade technology, resulting in a state-of-the-art advanced manufacturing operation.

Avion Express Malta, a subsidiary airline of Avion Express, has received FAOC (Foreign Air Carrier Certificate) from Transport Canada, issued by the Minister of Transport on the November 1.
|
Avion Express Malta has started its operations in May and had been flying for Europe’s third-largest low-cost airline Norwegian Air for the whole summer season.
|
At the same time, new business areas for newly established Avion Express Malta had been explored and tabs were kept on the promising region across the Atlantic. Acquiring a FAOC becomes a significant milestone for the young Malta-based company, as the certificate serves as a prerequisite to air operators seeking to conduct an air transport service to and from Canada.

Lufthansa Group has confirmed the decision of its Executive Board on the sale of the LSG Group's European business to Gategroup. The sale is part of the new strategy of Lufthansa Group to focus on the airline business.
|
The sale enables the new owner to further develop the catering business. A possible sale is subject to the approval of additional bodies, in particular the Supervisory Board of Deutsche Lufthansa AG, as well as clearance by the competition authorities.

Moscow Domodedovo Airport is piloting the cleaning robots. The initiative aims to improve automation of the air hub operations.
|
The airport has tested TASKI SWINGOBOT 2000, CLEANFIX RA 660 NAVI, and Russian VeDroid. The tests took place in the office space, and in the terminal building. The evaluation takes into account safety, design for manufacturing, quality of cleaning, as well as economic efficiency.
|
“Safety is our key requirement for cleaning robots. It is essential that if the obstacles appear, for instance, baggage trolley, a robot should stop, make a quick decision and resume movements without performance degradation. If a robot cannot continue the cleaning, it should go back to the service station,” said Moscow Domodedovo Press Secretary Alexander Vlasov.

The robots ensure fast and quality cleaning. However, it should be tailored to working in a dynamic airport environment, meeting all the safety requirements. The airport will complete the testing by the end of the year. The final purchase decision will be made in 2020.

Bombardier has received an inaugural shipment of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) at its Montreal facilities, further reinforcing the company’s commitment to sustainable flying. This step is the first in the company’s plan to secure long-term partnerships with fuel suppliers to deploy SAF to all of its facilities as worldwide supply becomes more readily available.

“We stand behind our commitment to help promote the increased use of SAF throughout the industry,” said David Coleal, President, Bombardier Aviation. “Today, we are proud to offer it for the first time at one of our Canadian facilities and it’s only the beginning. Bombardier is working toward ensuring that the use of these fuels becomes a standard in our day-to-day operations as we do our part to reduce CO2 emissions worldwide and meet the longstanding industry climate pledge.”

Since 2017, Bombardier has leveraged a supply of SAF for use during demonstration flights at its Hartford, CT, facility, home to the company’s customer demonstration operations. In addition, Bombardier flies its entire fleet of demonstration aircraft into major airshows and events to raise industry awareness and to demonstrate that SAF can become a mainstream, drop-in alternative to traditional jet fuel for general aviation aircraft. The company has actively participated in industry events promoting the use of SAF as a regular part of flying business aircraft, notably in Van Nuys, CA, and Farnborough, UK, and most recently at NBAA where SAF was available not just for flying in,
but also on-site at the static display for aircraft to fly home.

The Swedish charter carrier Nova Airlines AB (Novair) and Lufthansa Technik have signed a long-term exclusive engine maintenance services contract, for the CFM International LEAP-1A engines of Novair's two Airbus A321neo aircraft. Thereby, Novair has become the launching airline customer of Lufthansa Technik's technical services for this new engine type.

Lufthansa Technik has received the approval for this engine type by the German federal aviation administration LBA (Luftfahrtbundesamt) and is now in the position to offer comprehensive technical support for the LEAP-1A engine.
|
Covered by the new contract are different services, like engineering, overhaul and testing, mobile engine services (MES), engine parts repair and warranty handling.
|
Novair is the in-house airline for the Scandinavian tour-operator Apollo Travel Group. Both form part of DER Touristik Nordic.

The Association of Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA) has released that Subhas Menon will take up the position of AAPA Director General with effect from March 1, 2020, following the decision by the current Director General Andrew Herdman to step down after having successfully led the Association since 2004.
|
Menon has over 35 years of experience in international aviation with the Singapore Airlines Group, having served in a wide spectrum of senior management roles including international relations, marketing, product development, logistics, country and regional management, most recently as Regional Vice President Europe.
|

C&L Aerospace has signed an exclusive supplier agreement with Thai Aviation Industries (TAI), Thailand’s aircraft repair and maintenance service center. This partnership will allow C&L to better support the Royal Thai Airforce’s fleet of Saab aircraft through Thai Aviation Services.
|
The agreement, which is for two years, is the continuation of the successful history of the two companies working closely together to provide cost-effective solutions for Saab operators.
|
“Having this deal in place allows for fluid communication and inventory movement between both TAI and C&L,” said Jameel Wazir, C&L’s Executive Vice President. “Our commitment remains to be able to understand and anticipate the customer needs to provide the best possible support.”

Gulfstream Aerospace has delivered the Gulfstream G500™ to its first European customer. An undisclosed Western-Europe-based charter operator took delivery of the aircraft in Savannah.
|
The G500 earned certification from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency on Oct. 11 and is in service in North America, Brazil, the Middle East and Europe.
|
