A database system used to deploy staff crashed at Frankfurt Airport between 0100 and 1130GMT Wednesday, causing the cancellation of 70 flights, 23 of which were at Lufthansa.
|
Lufthansa confirmed that in addition, it had to reduce the number of arrivals at the airport, resulting in a number of passengers missing connecting flights, while other flights were delayed.
|
The system in question contains information on the position of aircraft which is used to send appropriate members of ground staff to planes. In this instance, Lufthansa has to ask flight crews to use radios and phones during the system failure.

106 airlines cover approximately 275 destinations in over 100 countries from Frankfurt Airport, with approaching 1,365 flights per day. Lufthansa and its Star Alliance partners are responsible for 77% of all passengers at the airport, while around 65% of all intercontinental flights in Germany are operated there.

For ultimate cabin efficiency and enjoyment, the nice Touch CMS introduces a new way to connect with the cabin through the Bombardier Touch dial, featuring business aviation's first application of an OLED display. Always within reach from the comfort of the passenger's seat, it discreetly rises from the side ledge with the touch of a finger to provide rapid control of entertainment and cabin settings.

The Global 7000 aircraft also introduces Suite controllers throughout the aircraft's full-sized living spaces, a first in the industry. These unique bulkhead-mounted interfaces allow for intuitive and home-like control of the cabin environment.

SAS is launching new high speed WiFi on its short and medium haul routes between Scandinavia and Europe. This means that passengers can now stream their favorite movies, use social media, send images from their seat or answer their emails.

SAS' WiFi is based on a satellite communication system supplied by Viasat Inc.; a global company from California, USA, that supplies internet services to private and public organizations, the military and airlines, including US government aircraft, Qantas and Jetblue.

SAS' WiFi has already been installed in 28 aircraft, and by September, around 40 aircraft will have the new high speed WiFi installed. SAS expects the vast majority of its fleet to be WiFi enabled by the first quarter of 2020.

The UK air traffic management service provider, NATS, has announced it has invested in Aireon, the company pioneering a space-based air traffic surveillance service set to revolutionise the aviation industry.
|
Through a network of 66 low earth orbiting Iridium® NEXT satellites, AireonSM will monitor the location of Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) equipped aircraft flying anywhere in the world, transforming the way air traffic control services are provided.
|
The service will offer global air traffic surveillance of aircraft. This means that oceans and remote regions like the poles, deserts and mountainous areas will have real-time aircraft surveillance for the first time.
|
The forecasted safety and airspace capacity benefits, together with the savings in fuel and carbon emissions, are being hailed as the greatest revolution in air traffic management since the introduction of radar 70 years ago.

News of the US$69 million investment, worth around 10% equity, was announced at a press conference in Washington DC, near Aireon’s headquarters, at which NATS also confirmed it is currently consulting with its customers about introducing the satellite technology for use over the North Atlantic starting with operational trials from 2019 to deliver the capacity and safety benefits that the airspace requires to keep pace with demand.

StandardAero has signed an agreement with Beijing Reignwood Star General Aviation Company to provide support to its fleet of Rolls-Royce M250 and RR300 engines powering the company’s Bell 407GX, 206L4, 206B3 and Robinson R66 helicopters.

Over the course of this one-year agreement, StandardAero, as a Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) certificated maintenance organization, will perform engine repair and overhaul services to Reignwood Star Aviation and its customers from its Singapore-based Rolls-Royce M250 Authorized Maintenance Center.

Through this partnership, StandardAero will also provide Reignwood Star Aviation with technical engine training to expand customer support capabilities in China.

Acro Aircraft Seating has delivered the first of their Series 7 Premium Economy Class seat, to launch customer Primera Air. This is the first of eight Airbus A321neo’s due for delivery in 2018 to have the front four rows (16 seats per shipset) installed with Acro’s Series 7 Premium Economy seats and the remaining rows with Acro’s Series 6 Economy seats. Having worked for Acro previously to support the design and development of the Superlight, Series 3 and Series 6 seat products, Acro invited Factorydesign to help define the architecture, packaging and design features of Series 7.

Flybondi.com, the first low-cost airline in Argentina, ends its first quarter with more than 130,000 passengers transported, 4 aircraft, more than 1000 flights made and more than 400 employees. By the end of April, Flybondi.com had already managed to keep 5% of the Argentinean aviation market.

After the start of its operations at the end of January 2018, in the first quarter the new airline began to consolidate its service that already has 12 operational routes: Buenos Aires, Córdoba, Mendoza, Tucumán, Neuquén, Bariloche, Corrientes, Jujuy and Iguazú and soon will be added the routes to Posadas (15/05), Bahía Blanca (30/05), Salta (15/06) and Santiago del Estero (02/07).

With respect to its fleet plan, Flybondi.com today already has 4 operational aircraft and the next 2 are expected to arrive in the next months. Also recently, the company finalized the leasing agreement for the arrival of its 7th. aircraft. The carrier aims to end the year 2018 with 10 aircraft.

In the midst of a fierce wage war, the Air France-KLM aviation group is changing the top management. Following the resignation of Jean-Marc Janaillac, the former Chief Financial Officer Frédéric Gagey will take over as Chief Executive Officer for the time being.

Air France-KLM has appointed its Chief Financial Officer Frédéric Gagey as interim Group CEO. He replaces the previous boss Jean-Marc Janaillac, who announced his resignation a week ago. The reason for this was that the majority of employees had spoken out against Janaillac's salary proposal, which was intended to resolve the tough wage dispute at Air France.

The airline's employees have been on strike for more money since February and there is no end in sight to the costly wage dispute. The unions demand a 5.1% wage increase for this year. Janaillac had offered 7% over four years.

Independent aircraft leasing company AeroCentury has announced the purchase of two Bombardier Dash 8-Q400 aircraft on lease to Croatia Airlines from two special purpose companies managed by GOAL German Operating Aircraft Leasing GmbH & Co. KG (GOAL).

Croatia Airlines is the government-owned flag carrier of the Republic of Croatia. It is headquartered and has its main hub in Zagreb, the Croatian capital, and operates domestic and international European routes from its Zagreb hub and also serves the key Croatian destinations of Dubrovnik, Split, and Zadar. Croatia Airlines was founded in 1989 and has been a member of Star Alliance since 2004. It currently operates a fleet of 12 aircraft, consisting of narrow body single aisle Airbus aircraft for mid-range routes and Bombardier large turboprops for the shorter routes.

The first A330neo for launch operator TAP Air Portugal - MSN1819 - has completed its 4:32 hours maiden flight.
|
The aircraft now joins the fleet of two A330-900 test aircraft already performing flight tests since October 19, 2017.
|
MSN1819 is the first aircraft fitted with the Airspace cabin by Airbus. It is equipped with light Flight Test Instrumentation during its test phase to check cabin systems such as air conditioning, crew rest etc.
