Saudi’s The Helicopter Company agrees to buy 26 more Airbus Helicopters

The Helicopter Company (THC), the first and only helicopter services provider licensed to operate commercial flights in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and established by the Public Investment Fund (PIF) in mid-2019 has signed its second purchase agreement with Airbus Helicopters. This agreement is for 20 of the newly launched five-blade H145 and six ACH160 aircraft. Both models will be powered by biofuel-compatible engines as part of the Kingdom’s policy of decarbonising its aircraft.

The first agreement with Airbus was for ten Hi25 helicopters to increase access to domestic tourism destinations and provide services such as filming and aerial surveying. “Our mission is to create a world-class National Aviation Champion and by signing this agreement with our trusted partner Airbus, we mark an important milestone in our journey to grow together with the nation in focus to fulfil Saudi Vision 2030. This deal comes as part of THC’s commitment to introduce new services with advanced technology that fulfil market demand and support the development of the Kingdom’s wider aviation sector,” said Raid Ismail, Chairman of the Board of THC.

United Aviate Academy’s inaugural class to start at new training facility in Phoenix

United Airlines has announced the inaugural class of 30 United Aviate Academy students will begin their studies on December 6, at the new flight training academy at Phoenix Goodyear Airport. The first class will complete a rigorous, year-long training programme that sets them up for a career that reflects United’s high standard of professionalism and deep commitment to delivering a safe, caring, dependable and efficient travel experience. United Aviate Academy received more than 7,500 applications from aspiring pilots around the country in less than six months.

After completing their training at the academy, students will build flight and leadership experience while working within the Aviate pilot development ecosystem at partner universities, professional flight training organisations and United Express carriers on their way to becoming United pilots.

Following the inaugural class, United Aviate Academy anticipates welcoming between 25 and 50 new students each month and expects to train at least 500 students yearly, with a goal for at least half of those being women or people of colour. United currently expects to hire at least 10,000 pilots by 2030.

Saudi Arabian Airlines Corporation orders CFM LEAP-1A engines to power fleet of Airbus aircraft

Saudi Arabian Airlines Corporation it has ordered CFM International LEAP-1A engines to power its new fleet of 35 Airbus A321neo and 30 A320neo aircraft. This agreement, which also includes a Rate-Per-Flight-Hour (RPFH) services contract to cover engines from this new order as well as an additional 20 leased A320neo aircraft, is valued at approximately US$8.5 billion at list price.

Based in Jeddah, Saudi Arabian Airlines operates 61 CFM56-5B-powered Airbus A320ceo aircraft and SAUDIA Group's low-cost subsidiary, flyadeal, operates 11 CFM56-5B-powered Airbus A320ceo aircraft and five A320neo with LEAP-1A engines.

Under the terms of the agreement, CFM will also assist the SAUDIA Group subsidiary Saudia Aerospace Engineering Industries (SAEI) in developing its own engine overhaul services, including disassembly, inspection, assembly, testing and qualification/certification for the LEAP-1A engines.

IAG Cargo will grow its workforce with more than 500 new roles

IAG Cargo, the cargo division of International Airlines Group (IAG), will be creating more than 500 new roles over the next 12 months in the biggest recruitment drive in the organisation’s history, in areas ranging from operations to transformation.

This landmark recruitment campaign will support IAG Cargo to expand its cargo operation and meet growing customer demand. The business has welcomed many new customers since the start of 2021. It has seen a growing demand for some of its specialist products such as Constant Climate, which supports the movement of temperature sensitive cargo such as vaccines, its dedicated perishable product Constant Fresh and its Critical product which continues to be popular for customers needing to transport emergency items.

IAG Cargo’s third-quarter revenues increased by 34% compared to the same period in 2020 showing sustained growth as the business increases capacity across its network. As part of the campaign, IAG Cargo will be recruiting in areas across the business including operations, revenue and inventory management, data and analytics and projects.

flynas and CFM finalize RPFH agreement for LEAP-1A engines

In conjunction with French President Emmanuel Macron’s state visit to Saudi Arabia, flynas, the low-cost flag carrier, has finalised a multi-year Rate Per Flight Hour (RPFH) agreement with CFM International for the LEAP-1A engines powering the airline’s fleet of 80 Airbus A320neo aircraft. The support agreement is valued at US$4 billion at list price pertaining to the letter agreement for aircraft engine selection signed in 2018.

The RPFH agreement is a part of CFM’s portfolio of flexible aftermarket support offerings. Throughout the term of the agreement, CFM will guarantee maintenance costs for the airline’s 160 LEAP-1A engines on per-engine flight hour basis.

Beijing Police orders two AW189 helicopters

The Beijing General Aviation Co has placed an order for two AW189 super-medium twin-engine helicopters which will be delivered to the Beijing Police as the end user to strengthen its law enforcement, search and rescue and fire-fighting capabilities in the Chinese Capital’s metropolitan area. The first aircraft will be delivered in the first half of 2022, with the second one following in the first half of 2023. 

The contract marks the entry of the AW189 type into the Chinese civil helicopter market adding the super-medium-class model to a range of other Leonardo helicopter types. Once delivered, Beijing Police’s AW189s will feature a range of mission equipment, including search light, rescue hoist, tactical radios, weather/search radar, cargo hook and firefighting equipment provision, among others. The two AW189s will join seven other Leonardo helicopters (three AW139s, three AW109 Powers, one AW109 GrandNew) to make Beijing Police the largest Police Aviation unit in China with a nine aircraft fleet.

SIA Engineering signs CFM LEAP engine test agreement with Safran Aircraft Engines

SIA Engineering Company (SIAEC) has signed a ten-year agreement with Safran Aircraft Engines (SAE) to provide engine test services for the CFM LEAP-1A and -1B engines. SIAEC will provide the engine test services at its engine test facility, which will be upgraded with the latest data acquisition and control system from Safran Test Cells, a leading supplier in the CFM LEAP engine testing market.

SIAEC currently has an existing engine maintenance services agreement with SAE to provide engine on-site support, quick-turn and borescope inspection services for the CFM LEAP-1A and -1B engines. The addition of CFM LEAP-1A and -1B engine test capabilities and services will strengthen SIAEC’s comprehensive scope of MRO services that it provides to its original equipment manufacturer (OEM) partners and airline customers.

Eve and Nautilus Aviation partner to develop Urban Air Mobility operations in Australia

Eve Urban Air Mobility Solutions (Eve), an Embraer company and Nautilus Aviation, a division of Morris Group and Northern Australia’s largest helicopter operator, have announced a partnership focused on accelerating the development of the Urban Air Mobility (UAM) ecosystem in Australia. The partnership will see the introduction of Eve’s electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft (eVTOL) serving some of Queensland’s most iconic tourism attractions including the Great Barrier Reef.

As part of the partnership, Nautilus has ordered ten of Eve’s eVTOL aircraft, with flights taking off over the Great Barrier Reef by 2026. Morris Group Founder and CEO, Chris Morris said the new partnership with Eve accelerates the progress towards 100% of scenic flights over the Great Barrier Reef coming from zero emission electric aviation and is in line with Morris Group’s commitment to reach net-zero emission by 2030 across all of its businesses.

“This partnership is an exciting development for Nautilus Aviation and Morris Group. We believe economic success and environmental sustainability go hand-in-hand and aim to strengthen and enrich the environments in which we work. Eve’s eVTOL technology will integrate seamlessly into our operations to deliver a range of exciting zero-emission tourism experiences,” said Mr. Morris.
