Heart Aerospace and Garmin partner up for all-electric ES-19 fully integrated flight deck

Heart Aerospace, headquartered in Gothenburg, Sweden, has announced that it has entered into a long-term agreement with Garmin International (Garmin) for the provision of the Garmin G3000® integrated flight deck for its ES-19 all-electric nineteen-passenger airliner.

The first ES-19 is scheduled to be in service by 2026 and this first-generation aircraft will have a 400 km maximum range, driven entirely by lithium-ion batteries and electric motors. The main advantages of the ES-19 are its zero carbon emissions, low noise and appreciably lower operating costs when compared with similar-sized gas-turbine aircraft.

The modular Garmin G3000 integrated flight deck is light in weight and offers vibrant, high-resolution flight displays which support navigation, communication and flight sensor solutions and which integrates seamlessly with the ES-19 aircraft systems. Specifically designed for electric aircraft, the G3000 system that will be supplied for Heart Aerospace’s ES-19 will deliver enhanced capabilities to optimise the electric drive train and battery management systems.

“We’re thrilled to have Garmin provide its industry-leading G3000 integrated flight deck, customised and optimised for integration and operation in our ES-19 all-electric airliner,” said Anders Forslund, CEO of Heart Aerospace.

All Nippon Helicopter takes delivery of first ever Airbus H160

Airbus has delivered the first ever H160 to Japanese operator All Nippon Helicopter (ANH), heralding a new chapter for this next generation twin-engine helicopter. The multi-role H160 was delivered from Airbus’ helicopter facility in Kobe, Japan, where flight training and specialised equipment installation for electronic news gathering will be performed before the helicopter’s entry into service next year.

The H160 was granted its type certificate by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) in July 2020, followed by the certification from the Japan Civil Aviation Bureau (JCAB) in May 2021 and the Brazilian Civil Aviation Agency in September 2021.

ANH deploys an Airbus helicopter fleet comprising five AS365s and five H135s. This H160 will join its existing fleet for electronic news gathering for the TV stations across Japan.

Lufthansa Technik provides engine services for Frontier Airlines

Ultra-low-cost carrier Frontier Airlines has chosen Lufthansa Technik to repair and overhaul 21 CFM56-5B engines as well as to supply mobile engine services. In the next five years Lufthansa Technik will perform overhauls and surgical repairs on the engines which fly under Frontier's fleet of 112 Airbus A320 family aircraft. Lufthansa Technik in Hamburg, Germany, will overhaul the engines, whereas surgical repairs can be done locally at Lufthansa Technik's facility in Tulsa, Oklahoma. To this end, major investments were made at the Tulsa engine shop: new tooling was acquired, mechanics were trained and the existing test cell was upgraded to cover CFM56-5B testing.

The team in Tulsa will also perform mobile engine services for repairs necessary between overhauls, aiming to significantly reduce operational downtime and avoid unnecessary shop visits. Depending on the requirements of the individual repair solution, the available options range from on-wing and in-field services to more complex repairs performed at the shop in Tulsa.

FAA issues certificate of airworthiness for first type certified S-70M Black Hawk helicopter

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has completed its certification of the S-70M Black Hawk helicopter — a new type designation — by issuing Sikorsky, a Lockheed Martin company a restricted category special airworthiness certificate. FAA certification and the establishment of a pilot type rating, are expected to broaden the market for the military-designed helicopter by allowing civil and commercial operators in the United States to purchase new Black Hawk aircraft direct from the factory.

California public utility San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) took delivery of the first S-70M restricted category aircraft on November 18, at the Sikorsky Training Academy in Stuart, Florida. SDG&E will modify the aircraft to the Firehawk® configuration at United Rotorcraft, a division of Air Methods in Colorado. By 2023, the aircraft will be ready to drop water onto wild land fires with high-accuracy from its 3,785-litre (1,000-gallon) external tank.

Daher lays cornerstone for the Shap'In innovation center

Daher’s new 1,600 m² Shap'In TechCenter will bring together the company’s full spectrum of aerostructures and composites expertise in a single facility to be located on Daher’s existing site at Saint-Aignan-de-Grandlieu in the Jules Verne industrial innovation cluster near Nantes, France. Its operational startup is planned in October 2022.

This €7.5-million project is supported by €800,000 in funding from the French Aerospace Industry Modernization Fund and will respond to technical, economic and environmental challenges faced by the industry – while also training young talents. Shap'in will employ 160 people, half of whom will work on research and development projects.

Advanced composites in general – and thermoplastics in particular – are true game changers in the world of aerostructures because they enable the production of components that are simultaneously lighter and stronger than the materials previously used and at a lower cost. Another major advantage is that they can be recycled/repurposed as part of a circular economy. The resulting performance gains are therefore significant and help limit aviation’s environmental impact.

MHI RJ Aviation Group and Aero HygenX sign cooperation agreement for marketing and distribution of RAY UV-C Robot

Aero HygenX, makers of the “RAY” line of UV-C light disinfecting technologies for aviation, and MHI RJ Aviation Group (MHIRJ) have signed an agreement for the marketing of Aero HygenX’s autonomous UV-C cabin disinfecting products. The signing of this agreement marks the beginning of a new cooperation between Aero HygenX and MHIRJ. It will make faster, greener cabin disinfection readily available globally to operators of approximately 1300 CRJ Series aircraft.

Under the agreement, MHIRJ will support Aero HygenX in marketing the RAY line of chemical-free disinfection solutions. The RAY line, which uses UV-C light technology proven by Aero HygenX to eliminate pathogens from cabin surfaces and air, will be offered to CRJ operators as an alternative cabin disinfection method. Furthermore, MHIRJ will include information about the Aero HygenX’s technologies within its technical publications.

Designed for the transportation industry, RAY is a compact and light-weight autonomous robot which uses motion sensing technology to autonomously navigate interior spaces and disinfect surfaces quickly, safely and without the use of harmful chemicals, using UV-C light.
