According to a ruling by the European Court of Justice (ECJ), airlines may also be obliged to pay compensation to passengers in the event of wild strikes. The Luxembourg judges ruled on Tuesday that airlines are not automatically exempt from their obligation to pay compensation in the event of flight cancellations or delays due to unlawful work stoppages under collective bargaining agreements. Rather, decisions must be taken on a case-by-case basis.

The background to the trial was the wild strike by Tuifly employees in autumn 2016, which resulted in more than 100 flights being cancelled, while many others were delayed considerably. Since then, those affected have tried to sue the German courts for compensation payments. Their chances should now have improved significantly.

The ECJ judges argued that airlines could be exempt from reimbursement under two conditions. Firstly, the event that led to operational incapacity should not be part of normal operations. Secondly, the disruptive event should be beyond the airline’s control.
|
In view of the events at Tuifly 2016, the judges have found this was not the case. The company had previously announced surprising restructuring measures. Conflicts with employees are not unusual. The situation in autumn 2016 should therefore be regarded as part of normal business activity. In addition, the wild strike was not beyond the control of Tuifly - it ended a few days later after an agreement was reached between the company and the works’ council.

Tuifly, however, reacted in disappointment to the outcome.: "We respect the court's opinion," said a Tuifly spokesman for the German Press Agency. "Nevertheless, we stand by our view that we cannot sufficiently prepare ourselves for such wild strikes." With regard to the outstanding proceedings in Germany, he said: "We will now explain what preparations we have made in each individual case.”

Dr Alexis von Hoensbroech, currently Chief Commercial Officer of Lufthansa Cargo, is to become the new CEO and Chairman of the Executive Board of Austrian Airlines from August 1, 2018 thus the designated successor to Kay Kratky. The Supervisory Board of Austrian Airlines must approve this proposal at its next meeting.

London Oxford Airport, ranked the fifth busiest UK business airport in the UK and amongst the top 20 in Europe, is among a handful of UK business airports that have seen consistent growth post the financial crash of 2007.

According to Eurocontrol figures published last month, London Stansted (with its five FBOs) leads the ‘most recovered’ with a 35% 10-year growth. But London Oxford is a close second with an overall 32% growth.

London Luton Airport retains its crown as the number one airport for business aviation movements, but it and a few other London-centric airports have become “increasingly squeezed for slots, to the benefit of airports like us,” said James Dillon-Godfray, Head of Business Development, speaking at London Oxford Airport’s pre-EBACE 2018 media briefing last week. "With night flights constrained at key peer airports we can still operate to midnight seven days a week."

The uptick in the number of large cabin business aircraft movements it saw last year continues, while the 20% increase in helicopters handled in 2017 shows no sign of reducing. Rotary activity will increase further when the Children’s Air Ambulance moves to Oxford in May.

London Oxford Airport is responding to upped demand for more home-based and visiting business jets with the imminent completion of a brand new 16,000 ft².-sized hangar (Bombardier Global 7000 compatible, plus offices.) “With the continuing demand for hangarage we are working on plans for the next major expansion to the north of the current site fulfilling the need for aircraft residency (there are some 25 business jets residing at the airport) and on-site MRO capability is provided by Gama Aviation, Excellence Aviation, Volare Aviation, P3 Engineering, A2B Aero, Airbus Helicopters and CAE OAA."

Further infrastructure enhancements confirmed early this year include a brand new 101-room Premier Inn hotel which will be built at the entrance to the airport, catering for air crew; owners and pilots bringing aircraft in for maintenance and friends and families visiting air cadets at resident pilot training schools CAE Oxford Aviation Academy and Airways Aviation. The hotel is scheduled to open summer next year.

FLYdocs, the aviation data and records management software provider and a global leader in managing the lease transfer of aircraft and assets, has reported that MCAP, a global aircraft leasing company, has switched to the FLYdocs platform to manage their complete fleet.
|
With a fleet of more than 70 aircraft owned and managed, MCAP were looking for a platform to improve their aircraft transition management functions. While they utilize multiple IT systems in their operations, they decided to focus on reorganizing their data and record management functions and switched to FLYdocs. They selected FLYdocs as it will bring them visibility and instant access to all records for their entire fleet of aircraft. This includes online physical inspection reports used in mid-term audits or during a transfer and aircraft records.

The platform will also enable MCAP to easily identify what needs to be worked on, during mid-term audits or when aircraft are coming to the end of lease, to ensure an easy and smooth transaction for both their current and next operators.

Jet Aviation has received EASA Supplemental Type Certification (STC) for Ka-band system integration on a Boeing 747-400 in Basel. The company is also working on Satcom SBB and Live TV systems installations. It recently demonstrated compliance with the latest EASA bird strike requirement on the Rockwell Collins Live TV Radome.

Jet Aviation is investing in connectivity solutions to ensure its customers can enjoy the fastest internet connectivity available in the market for commercial aircraft and private jets. The company's engineering team in Basel spent two years developing a technical solution for Ka-band system integration.

After demonstrating EASA-compliance, the solution was first implemented on a Boeing 747-400 and Jet Aviation was issued the EASA STC in late 2017. Jet Aviation is currently developing a second EASA STC for a Boeing 767-300 aircraft and further plans to revise its 747-400 STC for another model in the 747 series, including a new antenna location.

AAR , a provider of aviation services to commercial airlines and governments, has been awarded a 10-year hybrid (cost-plus-fixed-fee and firm-fixed-price), indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity (IDIQ) contract by the U.S. Army Contracting Command for aircraft and support equipment maintenance, minor modification and supply chain management.
The work will be primarily performed outside the continental U.S. in support of U.S. Army operations.

BAA Training has announced the establishment of a new company in Vietnam – BAA Training Vietnam which is to operate a training centre of 4 full flight simulators and Ab Initio flight school by 2023.

According to the Boeing projections Asia Pacific region will require up to 253,000 new pilots until 2036. Looking at South-East-Asia alone, the aircraft numbers will grow from 1,410 in 2016 up to 4,200 aircraft by 2036, 77% of which will be made up of single aisle airplanes, mainly A320 and B737 family aircraft. The total number of A320 fleet is predicted to rise from 120 aircraft in 2017 to 226 aircraft in 2024. Starting from 2019 a number of Boeing 737MAX aircraft in the market will multiple, reaching 59 aircraft and will continue to grow reaching 317 Boeing 737MAX aircraft in the region by 2023. To respond to the growing training needs in the region, BAA Training Vietnam is building a brand new training facility.

As constructions of the training centre are underway the first Airbus A320 full flight simulator is set to be deployed by the end of 2018. To continue the development and increase the training centre capabilities Airbus A320neo and Boeing 737 MAX full flight simulators are planned to be assembled until 2020. In addition, BAA Training Vietnam aims to open an Ab Initio flight school in the next five years, in order to provide the region with complex pilot training solutions.

Aircraft Maintenance and Engineering Corporation (Ameco) and Lufthansa Technik AG have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for in-depth cooperation of support for business jets at Asian Business Aviation Conference & Exhibition (ABACE).
|
The intent of this cooperation between Ameco and Lufthansa Technik will be the establishment of a long-term cooperative partnership, which will combine mutual strengths to provide the best support for Chinese clients and to jointly develop the business jet market in China as such.
|
Both parties will work closely together to improve and extend the availability of technical support for business jets in China, as well as jointly develop new solutions demanded by the market in order to continuously provide high quality services to their customers in China.

On the first day of the Asian Business Aviation Conference & Exhibition, Fokker Techniek, a business of GKN Aerospace, has announced that it has signed a contract with long-term customer K5-Aviation for the first ever ACJ319neo VIP completion.
|
The completion starts in May 2019 and is scheduled to be ready for delivery at the beginning of 2020. This order comes in addition to the already contracted completions.
|
Luca Madone of K5-Aviation says “Awarding Fokker Techniek for this prestigious project was a logical continuation of the existing relationship both companies have from previous projects. We believe Fokker will deliver again on time and according to our highest expectations. The aircraft will have a modern interior with a focus on saving weight and will include the latest interior technologies.”

Universal Avionics has appointed Curtis Thelen to the position of Chief Financial Officer for the company. Mr. Thelen transitions into this new role as predecessor, Michael Delgado retires after 20 years with the company.
|
Mr. Thelen joined Universal Avionics in 2007 when he assumed the position of Controller. He has a business degree in Finance and Accounting, and a Master’s Degree in Business.
|
“We’re pleased to have Curtis Thelen move up to CFO,” said Paul DeHerrera, Universal Avionics Chief Executive Officer. “His strong financial background and experience with the Universal Avionics culture will be extremely valuable as the company continues on its solid growth path,” he added.
