Lufthansa to cancel 800 flights on Friday due to pilots strike

German pilots’ union Vereinigung Cockpit (VC) has announced that Lufthansa pilots will be instigating a one-day strike beginning at midnight Thursday local time. The announcement has come on the back of failed pay talks and will result in the cancellation of approximately 800 flights, which will affect roughly 130,000 passengers, while also disrupting cargo services. Flag carrying Lufthansa has confirmed that flight cancellations will affect both Frankfurt and Munich Airports. VC is demanding a 5.5% pay rise this year for its more than 5,000 pilots and automatic inflation compensation thereafter. Lufthansa had offered a total of €900 euros more in basic pay per month in two stages over an 18-month term plus an agreement guaranteeing cockpit staff a minimum fleet size.

"We hope to get back to negotiations as soon as possible," a Lufthansa spokesperson said today
(Thursday), adding: "However, we cannot bear the cost increases associated with VC's demands
either". A further blow to Lufthansa was dealt by Germany’s cartel office which has announced that
Lufthansa has been prohibited from ending existing long-term cooperation agreements with Condor,
a charter airline, until further notice, advising that the national carrier was impeding Condor from
competing on long-haul routes. However, Lufthansa has chosen not to accept the cartel office’s
decision and according to the carrier: "… we do not share the Bundeskartellamt's view and will
therefore submit the decision to a judicial review."

GKN Aerospace delivers innovative energy efficient Turbine Exhaust Module to MTU

GKN Aerospace engineers in Trollhättan Sweden, have successfully designed, developed and delivered a new Turbine Exhaust Module to MTU in Germany as part of the EU funded Clean Sky-2 EMVAL demonstrator programme. The Turbine Exhaust Module is paramount for heat dissipation and performance of an aero-engine and therefore a key component in improving the efficiency.

The EMVAL (Engine Material VALidation) engine demonstrator project includes the development and testing of a new MTU turbine module and a new GKN Aerospace turbine exhaust module, using an existing turbo shaft engine modified as test vehicle. The ground testing of the full-scale Engine demonstrator later this year at MTU is a key milestone in validation of the concept.

The module from GKN Aerospace includes a novel lightweight turbine exhaust case (TEC) design with separated thermal and mechanical functionality. It has been produced with extensive use of additive manufacturing (AM). The TEC consists of an inner load carrying structure and aerodynamically shaped vanes (or heat shielding fairings). This concept can withstand higher temperatures than current TEC’s, but it also saves weight as the axial length can be reduced. GKN Aerospace will be presenting a paper on EMVAL and other demonstrator programmes on 8 September at the ICAS conference in Stockholm.

Southeast Aerospace receives STC certification for BELL 407 Helicoptor operator station

Southeast Aerospace has received the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Supplemental Type Certification (STC) number SR04546AT for the installation of their SEA special mission operator station in the Bell 407 helicopter.

Southeast Aerospace designed and manufactured the operator station as an ideal mounting solution for housing mission equipment in the Bell 407 helicopter to support Airborne Law Enforcement (ALE) missions. Obtaining STC
certification for the operator station provides a seamless path to meeting the regulatory and safety requirements of an FAA-approved installation in the Bell 407, mitigating additional costs or requirements for both the customer and installation facility.

The operator station was designed to support the Tactical Flight Officer's (TFO) mission as a primary focus. Dual monitors provide an extended viewing area for mission sensor and mapping data, and the operator station cabinet
offers ample space for housing a fully integrated mission suite of their choosing.
