At the Farnborough International Airshow, DHL Express announced an order for 14 Boeing 777 Freighters, which also includes options and purchase rights for 7 additional aircraft. The delivery of the first four planes is expected to be completed in 2019.
|

Overall, these 14 intercontinental plane replacements are capacity neutral, but operational wise with significant cost, efficiency and reliability benefits. And, while DHL Express in the past has chiefly been leasing aircraft to operate its global network on the routes, the purchase of fully owned freighter aircraft will improve the cost position of the DHL Express division going forward. For 2018, pre-payments have already been included in the group Capex guidance.

Expanding cross-border e-commerce sales will grow to US$4.48 trillion by 2021, which means a growth of 19.2% per year. DHL's investment in the 777 Freighters is a direct answer to the growing demand for global express capacity. Being the largest twin-engine cargo airplanes in the world, Boeing's 777 Freighters are capable of flying 4,900 nautical miles (9,070 kilometers) with a cargo load of 102 tons.

These state-of-the-art aircraft will reduce CO2 emissions by 18 per cent versus the aircraft being replaced. This will help us to contribute to greater sustainability in line with our climate protection target which is to reduce all logistics-related emissions to zero by the year 2050.

DHL Express operates over 260 dedicated aircraft with 17 partner airlines on over 600 daily flights across 220 countries.

Following the delivery last week of Okay Airways’ first leased Boeing 737 MAX 8, GECAS signed another contract with Okay Airways for the purchase-and-leaseback with pre-delivery payment financing of two Boeing 737 MAX 8s. The aircraft, fitted with CFM LEAP-1B engines, are scheduled for delivery in July and September 2019.

Established in 2004, Okay Airways is the first privately-owned aviation company in operation in China. Based in Tianjin Binhai International Airport, the carrier currently operates an all-Boeing fleet. The new 737 MAX 8s will provide Okay with the latest technology and fuel efficiency to enhance their fleet, which services over 150 domestic and international routes and connects to approximately 70 cities.

Embraer forecasts demand for 10,550 new aircraft with up to 150 seats worldwide, worth US$ 600 billion, over the next 20 years. The in-service fleet is set to increase to 16,000 aircraft, up from the 9,000 aircraft currently in operation. Market growth will drive 65% of this demand, while the remaining 35% will replace ageing aircraft.

Whilst region-specific outlooks vary considerably, efficiency and sustainability remain the underlying drivers of the projected market demand. The up to 150-seat segment will form an ever more integral part of the global air transport eco system.

The economic performance of the airline industry will mostly depend on how far costs will rise and to what extent the industry can sustain a healthy revenue environment. Aircraft in the up to 150-seat segment are the best placed to combine cost efficiency with stronger yields.

Even though every facet of the industry has excelled over the past years, we are now warming up for the next period of higher costs, with pressures on yields likely to continue unabated. Profits are eroding and gains wiped out with rising costs”, said John Slattery, President & CEO, Embraer Commercial Aviation.
The segment’s new product lineup challenges the "paradigm" that smaller aircraft necessarily have higher CASK, and now approach the seat cost economics of larger narrow-body aircraft with roughly 20% trip cost advantage.

ATR has appointed Maggie Bergsma as Head of Communications and Corporate Branding for ATR.
|
Bergsma joins ATR from Airbus Defence and Space where she held several senior communication roles for the last seven years after having been with Airbus Commercial Communications for eight years and spending 15 years in international consultancy prior to that.

GKN Aerospace has developed a new hydrophobic coating for cockpit windows in its transparencies centre of excellence in Garden Grove, USA. The permanent surface treatment delivers in-flight / ground operation rain shedding and significantly enhances resistance to surface abrasion. The technology is being flight trialled in the USA and is now undergoing performance assessment with Airbus on its flight-test aircraft.

Preliminary test results show that the new surface treatment could be added to the range of available solutions for ice and rain protection.
|
The new GKN Aerospace technology is a permanent solution that only needs to be applied once in the lifetime of a window. By contrast, the hydrophobic technologies currently available in the market today provide only a temporary solution that requires repeat application every six to eight months, dependent on flight hours and conditions.

GE Aviation has successfully completed one-third of the 25 major test campaigns required for certification of the GE9X and is on track to certify the engine next year. GE9X, the largest commercial engine, will power Boeing's new 777X aircraft.
|
Completed tests include crosswind operability, high-pressure turbine stress, icing, emissions, water ingestion and the first phase of flight testing on GE's flying testbed. A total of eight engines are involved in the certification program, with efforts focused at three key sites: GE Aviation's massive engine testing facility in Peebles, Ohio; the Testing, Research and Development Centre (TRDC) in Winnipeg, Canada; and GE Aviation flight test operation in Victorville, California.

Following the Intergovernmental Agreement signed between France and Ukraine on June 8, Airbus Helicopters has signed a contract with the Ukrainian Ministry of Interior for the purchase of 55 civil helicopters destined for search and rescue (SAR), public services, and emergency medical service (EMS) missions in the country.
|
The 55 aircraft include 21 repurposed H225s, and 10 brand new H145s and 24 H125. The contract, which also foresees the setting up of a local training and maintenance centre, was signed in Kiev on July 14.

ST Engineering Aerospace has secured a component Maintenance-By-the-Hour (MBH™) contract from Japan Airlines, further growing its component support for operators in the Asia region.
|
|
Under the multi-year contract, ST Engineering Aerospace will provide integrated component support to Japan Airlines Group’s entire fleet of 62 Boeing 737-800s.
|
This adds to the airframe maintenance services that ST Engineering Aerospace is currently providing to Japan Airlines, broadening the range of services in maintenance, repair and overhaul that the airline gets to enjoy from one service provider.

PPG will supply windshields and cockpit side windows to Dassault Aviation for the new Falcon 6X. This marks the first time PPG will supply flight-deck windows for a Dassault Aviation production program.
|
|
The Falcon 6X jet will be the largest and most advanced business jet ever built by Dassault Aviation and the first ultra-widebody business jet. The aircraft will be equipped with uniquely shaped, lightweight glass windshields and cockpit side windows by PPG.
|
PPG will produce the windshields and cockpit side windows for the Falcon 6X at its Huntsville, Alabama, plant. The transparencies will comprise three plies of optically clear PPG HERCULITE® II chemically strengthened glass for lightweight strength and reliability. Because the Falcon 6X jet will not be equipped with windshield wipers, PPG SURFACE SEAL® hydrophobic coating on the flight-deck windows will enhance water shedding for visibility.

Guernsey based airline Aurigny and turboprop manufacturer ATR have announced the signature of a Letter of Intent for the purchase of three ATR 72-600s, subject to the approval of the States of Guernsey. These three aircraft are expected to replace the current three ATR 72-500s operated by the airline.
|

These new ATR -600s will feature the new ClearVision™ Enhanced Vision System (EVS), which uses an external camera to display an augmented outside-view in real-time to a head-mounted visor, worn by the pilot. The EVS significantly improves a pilot’s vision and as Guernsey is situated in the English Channel it is regularly affected by fog, often at short notice, leading to disruptions to flight operations. An ATR equipped with the ClearVision™ EVS addresses this pain point of the pilot’s limited visibility and could have saved 50% of the forbidden landings (24 of 48) in Guernsey, over the period of a year. Aurigny anticipates that this innovation will deliver significant savings in their future operations.

ClearVision™ is an option on ATR’s latest avionics suite, Standard 3, which delivers important operational improvements. In addition to the EVS selected by Aurigny, ClearVision™ also offers a Synthetic Vision System (SVS) that provides the pilot’s Head-Up Display with digital images of terrain and obstacles, from an extensive database. Operators can also opt for a Combined Vision System (CVS), combining the EVS and SVS, and offering pilots the best possible vision and situational awareness.

With an industrial backlog of engines and services contracts at US$200 billion, GE Aviation enters this year's Farnborough Airshow in England focused on its growing commitments to a vibrant aviation industry.

At the show, GE Aviation and its engine partner companies will add to its backlog of more than 15,000 orders and commitments for commercial engines, which includes the GE9X engine being developed for the Boeing 777X and the best-selling LEAP engine family from CFM International (50/50 joint company of GE and Safran Aircraft Engines) for three single-aisle aircraft models.

The CFM LEAP powers the largest and most utilized fleet of Airbus A320neo aircraft, which entered service in 2016; as well as the Boeing 737 MAX, which entered service last year. In the most aggressive engine production ramp-up in airline history, GE Aviation and Safran facilities already have delivered 1,000 CFM LEAP engines.

GE Aviation and its partner companies expect to deliver up to 2,900 commercial jet engines in 2018, adding to the 35,000 commercial engines already in service. By 2020, GE and its partner companies expect to have 39,000 engines in the commercial engine installed base with the vast majority monitored and diagnosed around-the-clock by the GE-developed Predix cloud-based platform, which reduces engine maintenance.

The growing installed base drives GE Aviation's service business with engine shop visits expected to grow from 5,500 this year to about 6,700 by the decade's end.

African airline Air Botswana has signed a firm order for two ATR 72-600s. Having operated ATR -500 series aircraft since 1996, the Botswanan national flag carrier has been an ATR operator for more than 20 years and will now upgrade and restructure its fleet with the addition of the latest generation turboprop aircraft.
|
|
The aircraft will be configured with a 70-seat, dual class cabin, and deliveries are scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of this year. They are also equipped with the newest navigation aid tools.
|
|
The airline currently operates a fleet of three ATR 42-500s and one ATR 72-500. With this deal, the airline will start a progressive replacement of their former turboprop fleet, adding the newest standards of comfort.
|
ATR estimates that there will be the need for over 3000 turboprops in the next twenty years, with more than 10% of these aircraft destined for Africa & the Middle East and foresees the creation of some 300 new routes.
|

West Star Aviation is pleased to announce that it has acquired hangars at Perryville Regional Airport, (KPCD) in Perryville, MO, and will quickly bring capabilities online as its fourth full-service maintenance facility.
|
|
The company closed on its fourth hangar on the airport in late June, expanding their KPCD footprint to over 120,000 ft² in hangar and office space. West Star's largest hangar at its Perryville location can accommodate multiple large–sized corporate aircraft.
|
In the coming months, West Star will be adding employees and capabilities as they continue to develop this location to its fourth full-service MRO. West Star currently occupies four hangar facilities at the airport, which includes a 28,800 ft² state-of-the-art paint facility with a downdraft filtration system. This paint facility also has the capacity for largesized corporate aircraft. Most recently, the company has promoted Kyle French to General Manager to oversee all of Perryville's operations.
