MTU Maintenance Berlin-Brandenburg lays foundation stone for new logistics center

MTU Maintenance, one of the world’s leading provider of MRO services for commercial aircraft engines and industrial gas turbines, has laid the foundation stone for a new logistics center at its Ludwigsfelde location on July 20.
The total investment for the new building with a workspace of 6,500 m² is €11.5 million. The additional floor space is needed to cater to the location’s continued growth. Between 2016 and 2018, the number of operating hours has risen 30% and is expected to increase further in the two-digit percentage range in the years to come, the reasons being higher work-loads and the addition of new engine models to the company’s portfolio.
Plans are to have the logistics center up and running in June 2019.
“The construction of the new logistics center marks another important milestone in the devel-opment of our company,” said André Sinanian, Managing Director & Senior Vice President of MTU Maintenance Berlin-Brandenburg. “The new building is a symbol of the success our loca-tion has seen so far. At the same time, this construction project affirms our commitment to continue to cater to the needs of our customers worldwide in an optimum and flexible manner – true to our company vision ‘Excellence made in Brandenburg’.”

Gulfstream earns type and production certificates from FAA

The Gulfstream G500 received both its type certification and production certificate from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). These certifications pave the way for the first completed G500 delivery to a customer as planned later this year.
The FAA type certification verifies the airworthiness of the aircraft’s design, while the production certificate confirms that the company’s production processes comply with Federal Aviation Regulations. The G500 is the first clean-sheet Gulfstream aircraft to receive its type and production certificates on the same day.
During the G500 certification program, Gulfstream demonstrated even better performance for the G500, including a takeoff distance of just 5,200 feet/1,585 meters, 200 ft/61 m less than originally projected.
The G500 expands the possibilities for high-speed travel by offering an unprecedented combination of speed, technology, reliability, safety and performance. The aircraft is optimized for comfort and productivity, with low cabin sound levels and cabin altitudes, 100 percent fresh air and 14 panoramic windows that bathe the cabin in natural light.

Embraer delivers 28 commercial and 20 executive jets in 2Q18

During the second quarter of 2018, Embraer has delivered 28 jets to the commercial aviation market and 20 business jets, being 15 light jets and 5 large jets. On June 30, Embraer’s firm order backlog totaled US$17.4 billion.
In 2Q18, Embraer celebrated a major milestone when Norway’s Widerøe took delivery of the first production E190-E2 in early April in a ceremony at Embraer’s facility in São José dos Campos, Brazil. Scandinavia’s largest regional airline started its scheduled passenger service with the aircraft a few weeks later.
Regarding the commercial aviation market, Air Costa’s order for 50 E-Jets E2 is no longer considered in Embraer’s backlog as of the end of 2Q18. This backlog adjustment has no impact on the E2’s production or delivery schedule for 2018 or for 2019.

Delta and WestJet to create new transborder joint venture

Delta Air Lines and WestJet have signed a definitive agreement to create a comprehensive transborder joint venture arrangement that will offer customers an extensive route network within the U.S. and Canada.
The agreement deepens the existing codeshare partnership between the carriers and follows the signing of a memorandum of understanding in December 2017 announcing the intention to form a joint venture. MTU Aero Engines wins orders valued at circa €800 million

This year’s Farnborough International Airshow proved a major success for MTU Aero Engines. Germany’s leading engine manufacturer secured orders worth around €800 million (according to list price), in particular with orders and memorandums of understanding (MoUs) for the PW1000G- geared turbofan (GTF) engine family for single-aisle aircraft. It powers the Airbus aircraft A220 (formerly C Series) and the A320neo as well as Embraer E2 jets, amongst others. “GTF programs are shaping MTU’s future in the commercial engine business,” commented MTU CEO Reiner Winkler, referring to the order books. “The success of the geared turbofan family became evident once more at the Farnborough Airshow. PW1000G engines have been very well received in the market. Thanks to our preparation in recent years, we are ready for the ramp-up,” Winkler added.
MTU benefits from a large number of the deals made at the airshow through its partnership shares in engine programs. In fact, almost all of the relevant deals were for the high performing GTF technology. JetBlue placed the biggest order; the carrier agreed to buy up to 120 aircraft powered by PW1500G engines for its A220 fleet of Airbus (former C Series), followed by US start-up investor David Neeleman, who ordered 60 aircraft of this type. More orders came in for the PW1900G, the geared turbofan variant powering the E190-E2/E195-E2 single-aisle aircraft from the Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer. Helvetica Airways, a Swiss carrier based in Zurich, ordered 24 E190-E2 jets equipped with this engine. The airline Wataniy Airways from Kuwait was also convinced by the technology. It ordered 20 aircraft of the E190-E2 model. And Brazilian low-cost carrier Azul made a commitment for 21 aircraft of this type. Orders for five additional E2 jets came from unnamed customers.
The PW1100G-JM, the engine powering the A320neo family, continued to see high demand at the UK-based airshow. MTU benefits from orders placed by Air Lease Corporation (ALC) for more than 43 narrowbodies (A320neo/A321neo), CALC for 18 A320neo aircraft as well as from Middle East Airlines, the national airline of Lebanon, based in Beirut, which ordered eleven A320neo aircraft.
