OAG, the airline data specialist, has released the results of a new study on the U.S.’s top 25 airports, revealing that in terms of connectivity, Chicago O’Hare Airport comes top of the list for the third year in a row. The airport’s actual Connectivity Index Score was 479, up 24 points from last year and well ahead of Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson Airport, which scored 396 points.
Part of Chicago O’Hare’s success comes from its two main tenants, United Airlines and American Airlines, both of whom have expanded their routes over the last two years. Both carriers use the airport as a major hub for passengers who are connecting with final-destination flights.

O’Hare is also in an unusual position in that it is a major hub for two of America’s largest carriers, the largest hub for United and third-largest hub for American Airlines, while Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson Airport is the largest hub for Delta Air Lines which has only a nominal presence at O’Hare.

In terms of global results, O’Hare was the second-most connected airport behind London Heathrow which remains the crossroads for many airlines which operate on a global basis, serving a huge number of international destinations.
|
While the report’s results present good news for Chicago’s mayor Rahm Emmanuel who recently gave the go-ahead with a US$8.5 billion multi-year revamp of the airport, including a new international terminal, next year’s results may well differ. American Airlines recently announced new routes from O’Hare to Shanghai and Beijing, while United Airlines is focusing the expansion if international routes from hubs other than Chicago O’Hare.

As far as airline connectivity is concerned, American Airlines was dominant, followed by United Airlines and then Delta Air Lines.

Airbus’ A320 Family production facility in the U.S. will deliver its first aircraft partially powered by sustainable jet fuel. The latest A321 for JetBlue is due to depart Mobile on September 20, with 15% sustainable jet fuel in its tanks.
|
In total, five A321 aircraft are due to be delivered to JetBlue from Mobile using sustainable fuel by the end of 2018. All of the fuel will be supplied and certified by Air BP. It will be loaded into the aircraft by Signature Flight Support, Airbus’ fueling services provider in Mobile.
|
Since May 2016, Airbus has offered customers the option of taking delivery of new aircraft from Toulouse, France, using a blend of sustainable jet fuel. Following the deliveries to JetBlue, Airbus will determine the next steps toward offering this option to more customers taking aircraft deliveries from Mobile. Longer term, Airbus envisions supporting industrial production of sustainable fuels for aviation in the southeastern U.S.

Alaska Air Group has reported August operational results on a consolidated basis for its mainline operations operated by subsidiary Alaska Airlines and for its regional flying operated by subsidiary Horizon Air Industries and third-party regional carriers SkyWest Airlines and Peninsula Airlines.
|
On a combined basis for all operations, Air Group reported a 3.8% increase in traffic on a 4.3% increase in capacity compared to August 2017. Load factor decreased 0.5 points to 85.7%.

Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, has marked the opening of the new runway at Velana International Airport in the Maldives by operating one of its Airbus A380 aircraft to the island nation.
|
The new 3,400 metre-long and 60-metre-wide runway is the first in the Maldives capable of supporting an A380. The special Etihad operation was piloted by First Officer, Ali Ahuson, who is from The Maldives.

Etihad Airways’ A380 features a total capacity of 496 seats – up to two guests in The Residence, nine First Apartments, 70 Business Studios and 415 Economy Smart Seats.

The Boeing Company has released that Phil Musser, senior vice president of Communications, will depart the company in early November due to personal and family considerations. Anne Toulouse, current Boeing vice president of Global Brand Management, will replace Musser on an interim basis until a permanent successor is named.
|
Musser joined the company in September 2017 and over the past year has positioned Boeing Communications for continued growth and success.

Air BP, the international aviation fuel products and services supplier, returns to Africa Aerospace and Defence (AAD2018) at Waterkloof Air Force Base in Pretoria, South Africa, this week as a Gold Sponsor. The company will use the event to share how its technical services offer and low carbon solutions can support aviation growth in Africa. Set to be one of the fastest-growing aviation regions over the next 20 years, Africa is a key market for Air BP. It first started operations on the continent 75 years ago in Mozambique and Zanzibar and now provides fuel at around 40 locations across the continent.

Air BP’s technical services offer is a complete aviation fuel consultancy service tailored to customers’ individual requirements. It includes a range of innovative technical services for airports including the design, build and operation of fuelling facilities to help customers protect their operations and manage risk. Air BP is currently providing technical service agreements to customers in 13 African countries including South Africa, Mozambique, Madagascar and Egypt. Through the offer, Air BP has helped customers like Marvalene International Airport, Mozambique design and develop a new fuel system and into-plane operations, as well as developing bespoke training and inspection services for Vivo Energy in Ghana, Ivory Coast, Senegal, Morocco, Kenya, Uganda, Cape Verde and Mauritius.

In June 2018, Air BP celebrated one year since it took over the management and fuel operations at Cape Town International Airport. The airport has experienced double digit growth in international passenger numbers over this period, which Air BP has successfully managed without any safety incidents. Cape Town International complements Air BP’s operations at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, where it has managed a similar but larger scale operation since 2011.

GE Chairman & CEO John Flannery has reaffirmed the company’s continued commitment to Malaysia with a major US$80 million investment in GE Engine Services Malaysia (GEESM). Alongside this renewed commitment to the GEESM facility, GE also announced the establishment of the Global IT Service Desk, located at its headquarters in Kuala Lumpur.

GEESM, an aircraft engine services workshop, will enter into a long-term tenancy agreement with Impeccable Vintage Properties (IVP), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Malaysia Aviation Group Berhad, subject to terms to be mutually agreed in relation to GEESM’s Subang facility. This long-term tenancy agreement is part of GEESM’s plans to invest in tooling, testing and skills capabilities to support the maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) of CFM International’s cutting-edge LEAP engine.

The LEAP engine, produced by a 50/50 joint venture between GE and Safran Aircraft Engines, represents a leap ahead in terms of aviation technology and material, and powers aircraft such as the Boeing 737 MAX, Airbus A320neo and Comac C919 single-aisle jets. The MRO work on LEAP will introduce the next chapter of engineering excellence for GEESM’s Subang workshop, making it the first such facility outside the United States for GE.

HAECO ITM, a member of the HAECO Group, has renewed its long-term contract with Cebu Pacific Air to provide inventory technical management support for the airline’s Airbus A330-300 fleet.
|
The contract extension covers the services of component MRO, repair management, component pooling, component engineering, stores and logistics management in Manila, Main Base Kit (MBK) services, and AOG support, ensuring Cebu Pacific’s strong fleet performance with HAECO ITM’s customised and costeffective solutions.

Cebu Pacific currently has a fleet of eight Airbus A330-300 aircraft for its long-haul as well as high-traffic domestic and international routes.

CTT SYSTEMS AB; A market leader of aircraft humidity control systems, has reported that an undisclosed airline has selected Inflight Humidification (IFH) in Business Class to be line-fitted in its entire Airbus A350-900 fleet. Aircraft delivery is scheduled from second half of 2019 to 2023.

The Inflight Humidification (IFH) system from CTT Systems is a highly appreciated feature in the VIP aircraft world. Powered by humidifiers onboard, the Business Class cabin environment is elevated to the same VIP-level with best wellbeing performance on the market. Business Class passengers will more easily stay hydrated, aiding better taste, improved quality of sleep as well as reduction of jetlag.

A cabin climate optimized for wellbeing is all about replicating earth conditions. Modern widebody aircraft, such as the Boeing 787 and A350, have made great progress in lowering cabin altitude, reducing noise and vibrations, generating draft-free and fresher air, multiple temperature zones and advanced mode lightning. The level of humidity is the next cabin climate feature in order to improve the performance of the cabin and elevate the total cabin environment experience.

Although basic configured A350 and Boeing 787 aircraft obtain a passive increase in humidity of 1-2 % RH, it is still far too dry – drier than any of the driest climates on earth. In a Business Class cabin, without a humidification system, air humidity is only 6-10 % RH. By selecting optional cabin humidifiers, available as SFE on both Airbus A350XWB and Boeing 777X, passengers can benefit from best cabin environment in the air.

AAR, a leading provider of aviation aftermarket services to the world’s airlines, has entered a multiyear Integrated Component Solutions agreement with Air Malta to provide full power-by-the-hour (PBH) support of its A320neo aircraft. Air Malta will receive nose-to-tail ATA chapter coverage, including airframe, APU and engine line replaceable units (LRUs) together with the provision of on-site inventory in Malta.

The A320neo aircraft is the newest to join Air Malta’s growing fleet. This agreement expands upon an existing relationship in which AAR already supports the airlines’ most recently delivered A320ceo aircraft and marks the latest expansion of AAR’s PBH footprint across Europe.
|
AAR recently enhanced and centralized its global AOG and order fulfillment services by creating an International Operations Centre in London Gatwick to empower customer operational excellence.
