Passenger growth is estimated to grow three-fold by 20137, by which time 500 million people are expected to fly to, from or within India. Currently aviation in India supports 7.5 million jobs and 30 billion Rupees (US$420 million) of GDP (1.5% of the economy). Alexandre de Juniac, the International Air Transport Association’s (IATA) Director General and CEO called on the government of India to maximize the potential contribution of aviation to India’s development by addressing infrastructure constraints which currently limit growth, while government policies are imposing excessive costs on aviation. These remarks came in an opening address to the International Aviation Summit in Delhi, co-hosted by the Indian Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA), the Airports Authority India (AAI) and IATA.
In summary of recommendations regarding infrastructure:
Develop a comprehensive and strategic masterplan for India’s airports.
Remove all obstacles to successfully open Navi Mumbai as quickly as possible.
Modernize airport processes using technology in line with global standards.
Flexibly use military airspace to expand airspace capacity for civil operations.

In summary of recommendations regarding regulation:
Zero-rate GST for international travel in line with ICAO principles and international obligations.
Create a more competitive market for jet fuel by:
Adding domestic uplift of domestic jet fuel to the GST framework with full input tax credit allowed
Removing fuel throughput fees in line with global best practice
Creating competition with common-use open-access infrastructure, and
Regulating transparency in pricing of jet fuel
Reducing excise duty on fuel

In relation to collaboration, Mr. de Juniac said: “There are many priorities in fostering the economic and social development of India. Fundamental issues of eradicating poverty, ensuring quality education, providing health care and safe drinking water are massively important agenda items. Creating a better environment for aviation to do business can and will progress the nuts and bolts of India’s development day to day. Safe, secure and sustainable air links make our world a better place. That is why I call aviation the business of freedom. And the government and industry share a privileged responsibility to work together for its success,” said de Juniac.

AerFin has continued to build upon its achievements of 2017, collecting further accolades for its tremendous growth rate as well as continuing to support its expansive global customer base through the provision of its aftermarket supply-chain solutions.
|
Service Agreements
On the services side of the business, British Airways’ subsidiary, BA CityFlyer joined AerFin’s BeyondPool™ component program in February to support its entire fleet of Embraer E-Jets. BeyondPool™ offers a fixed-cost solution to cover all component requirements of Embraer E-Jets and operates out of AerFin’s London Gatwick facility.

This was followed up by the announcement in June that AerFin had signed a five-year contract to support IKAR Airlines’ fleet of seven Embraer E-Jets via its BeyondPool™ support programme. IKAR joins BA Cityflyer, which utilises the programme for its fleet of 20 Embraer E-Jets.

Elsewhere, AerFin signed a three-year TrueChoice™ Material Service Agreement with GE Aviation in April, further enhancing its relationship with the aircraft engine OEM. The agreement is for serviceable OEM parts and advanced repair and technology upgrades for the CFM56, CF34 and engines (widely used in commercial and some military aircraft).

Acquisitions
On the acquisitions side of the business, the firm signed agreements on a selection of assets, particularly in the narrowbody market, including six Airbus A320 family airframes and several CFM56-5B, CFM56-7B and V2500 engines.

In June, AerFin took delivery of its 10th Embraer E170 from Saudi Arabian Airlines. The delivery forms part of the fleet of 15 Embraer E170-LR aircraft acquired in 2017 Q2, which also included spare parts, engines, tooling and equipment required to support the entire fleet.

The acquisition of the 15 aircraft from Saudi Arabian Airlines was a significant moment in AerFin’s history, as it was not only the first major global fleet phase-out of the E-Jet product type, but it also pioneered an entire new aftermarket for the E-Jet, allowing AerFin to provide cost-saving solutions that were not previously available to operators.

Sales and Leasing
AerFin completed the outright sale of Airbus A340-300, MSN 208 to European Aviation Air Charter, also in June. The aircraft was part of the original fleet of 11 A340-300 aircraft that AerFin acquired from Hong Kong airline, Cathay Pacific in 2014.

In addition, AerFin leased four and sold 20 engines, including V2527-A5, CF34-8E and CFM56-5C in the first half of 2018. The engine leases and sales add to the strength and breadth of service solutions that AerFin brings to the market, not only in the sale of whole aircraft, but across other components as well.

BAE Systems Regional Aircraft has completed the engineering and installation of an ADS-B (Out) modification on two Avro RJ aircraft belonging to two separate operators, leading to the awarding of European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) Approval Certificate 10066079 for this major change modification.
|
|
On the back of this approval, CityJet of Ireland, Europe’s biggest Avro RJ operator, has placed an order with BAE Systems for modification kits covering its 13-strong fleet.

Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) is a surveillance technology in which an aircraft determines its position via satellite navigation and periodically broadcasts it, enabling it to be tracked without the need for any action from the pilot or from Air Traffic Control and providing an enhanced set of aircraft surveillance data to Air Traffic Management.

EASA has mandated that all aircraft weighing above 5,700kg or having a maximum cruise speed greater than 250 knots will need to be ADS-B compliant by June 7, 2020. In the United States the Federal Aviation Agency (FAA) has mandated ADS-B for January 1, 2020.
|

Following the EASA award BAE Systems is now working to ensure all European operators of the BAe 146/Avro RJ as well as those operators outside Europe that fly into European airspace are equipped with the ADS-B modification by the mandated date.
|
|
It is also investigating the possibility of obtaining Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Transport Canada Civil Aviation (TCCA) validation of the modification for operators of the aircraft in those countries/jurisdictions.
|
In addition, under its EASA Part 21G and J approvals, BAE Systems is also able to engineer and arrange the installation of ADS-B upgrades to other aircraft types and is currently evaluating solutions for other aircraft platforms.

Los Angeles, California-based Planet Nine (P9), the US’ newest boutique ultra long-haul charter specialist, makes its debut at the NBAA San Jose Regional Forum this week to present is latest Dassault Falcon 7X on the static display. It’s second 7X (N119NE) entered service several weeks ago, luxuriously outfitted with 16 VIP seats, including six individual sleeper seats – perfect for over-night Transatlantic flying.

Planet Nine secured its FAA Part 135 operating certificate in June this year and is already reporting a positive entry into service from its discerning clientele. Over the summer it performed several charters into Europe, including London Luton Airport and runway restricted Cannes Mandelieu. It recently ran several charters into Honolulu International Airport, pre-Hurricane, while other key charter destinations have included Nice, Geneva and Tivat Airport, Montenegro.

The Supervisory Board of Lufthansa Technik AG has appointed Sören Stark to the Executive Board, effective January 1, 2019. Stark will be responsible for the areas Fleet Services, Base Maintenance, Components, Logistics, IT and Quality Management.

Stark, who holds an advanced degree in industrial engineering, will take over from Dr. Thomas Stüger who is retiring at the end of 2018 after 14 years as a Member of the Executive Board.

The Supervisory Board of Lufthansa Cargo will appoint a successor for Sören Stark in the near future.
|
Dr. Thomas Stüger will be retiring at the end of this year after over 25 years with Lufthansa Technik. He helped shape the successful course of the company, most notably in advancing its internationalization.

Spatial, a provider of cabin crew training simulators, has announced that Aircalin has selected it to manufacture a Cabin Emergency Evacuation Trainer (CEET) and Cabin Service Trainer (CST).
The hybrid A320 / A330 CEET will enable Aircalin’s cabin crew to be comprehensively trained in all safety and emergency procedures (SEPs) for both aircraft types including door and exit operation, evacuation procedures and fire and smoke training. Custom-designed to provide a hyper-realistic training environment, the simulator will include a sound simulation system, window visuals and dual land training slide – all controlled by an easy-to-use, intuitively designed Instructors Operator Station (IOS).

Manufactured to meet Aircalin’s exact crew service training requirements, the A330 CST will ensure that trainees fully understand the passenger cabin layout and cabin systems of this aircraft type by familiarising them with cabin lighting, call lights, communications system, galley, lavatories and business and economy class seating. The highly realistic training environment will ensure Aircalin’s crew are effectively trained to deliver the highest levels of on-board service and cabin management.

Once completed, the two simulators will be shipped and installed at Aircalin’s crew training facility in New Caledonia.

JETcopter, a VTOL aviation startup, has announced the launch of tests of a new type propulsion system for VTOL aircraft.
|
|
This new propulsion system consists of two centrifugal air turbines in enclosed housings, each 200 cm (6.6 feet) in diameter, that will rotate in opposite directions at a high RPM to create thrust similar to 11 meters (36 feet) diameter helicopters rotors. The airflow from the turbines will be diverted by air ducts to four endpoints, that could be vectored in any direction. This layout will enable the enclosed rotors housing area to create a lifting force and unload rotors in horizontal flights like airplane wings. The compact enclosed rotors propulsion system will be safer in urban areas than helocopters, and the achieved bigger airflow speed could improve performances of next-generation VTOL aircraft.

JETcopter will start tests on a mobile platform shortly to measure generated airflow parameters, like speed, volume and sound at various RPM, and to test airflow vectoring possibilities. Aircraft with this propulsion system could open a new class of VTOL aircraft, ´Copterplanes´; efficient VTOL aircraft, that could be used as air taxis for intra or inter cities routes or as corporate or private high speed, safe and efficient next-generation copter.

This new and more effective propulsion system with automatic leveling control, instead of manual mechanical control, could allow piloting VTOL aircraft easier and simpler compared to helicopters, even with airplane pilot licence only. JETcopter plans to build a conceptual VTOL prototype within 24 months.
|
The company also developed a low cost carbon fibre fuselage production for the JETcopter and will use reliable, powerful and inexpensive automotive motors. The JETcopter is a unique and feasible project, where all three main VTOL aircraft components are ready to install without big investments to initial engineering. With 2 motors, each 400 hp, and 1000 kg empty weight, the JETcopter has a high power/weight ratio, 6-8 seats, VTOL-capacities, it will be powered by automotive motors and very low operational costs.

Joramco, the Dubai Aerospace Enterprise (DAE) engineering division, has successfully performed maintenance on one of flyadeal’s A320s, the Saudi low cost carrier. The layover took place during last month for 20 days duration.
|
Saudia, the flag carrier of Saudi Arabia, announced the creation of flyadeal on 17 April 2016. The venture is part of Saudia Group's SV2020 Transformation Strategy, which aims to elevate the group's units into world-class organizations by 2020. flyadeal will cater to domestic travelers, Hajj and Umrah pilgrims, and the rising number of tourists to Saudi Arabia, among other groups. The airline launched flights on 23 September 2017, linking Jeddah to Riyadh.

GKN Aerospace will develop and manufacture two full scale turbines for the Prometheus low-cost re-usable rocket engine demonstrator on liquid oxygen and methane propellants. The turbines will generate power for the methane fuel system, with the first turbine to be delivered at the end of 2019. Manufacturing will take place in cooperation with partners and at GKN Aerospace’s highly automated engine systems centre of excellence in Trollhättan, Sweden.

The new state of the art turbine with all its challenging loads - including very high pressure, high speed and high temperatures - incorporates the latest additive manufacturing (AM) technologies with higher performance, lower lead times and significant cost reduction. This innovative development will support the next step in AM: the use of this technology for future higher loaded critical components in terms of pressure, temperature and rotational speed.

GKN Aerospace’s space business unit, in Trollhättan, Sweden, has been active in the Ariane programme from its inception in 1974 until the current Ariane 6 partnership, and has made over 1,000 combustion chambers and nozzles as well as over 250 turbines for the Ariane rocket to date. Today it is the European centre of excellence for turbines and metallic nozzles, having contributed to the programme at every stage from initial research and development through cooperation with academia to the serial production.

Prometheus is an ESA funded program for a low-cost re-usable rocket engine demonstrator on methane propellant, with ArianeGroup as the Prime contractor.

Czech Airlines Technics (CSAT), a daughter company of the Czech Aeroholding Group which provides aircraft repair and maintenance services, has appointed a new Vice-Chairman of the Board of Directors. Effective September 3, 2018, Mr. Igor Zahradníček will be in charge of finance, development, procurement and logistics at the company.

“Czech Airlines Technics is a company with a long tradition where unique high-level expertise go without saying and quality and safety are not subject to discussion, but a must. Becoming a part of such a company’s further growth and this team is a challenge for me as a manager and I therefore look forward to working at CSAT,” Igor Zahradníček, the new Vice-Chairman of the Czech Airlines Technics Board of Directors, said.

For the last nine years, Igor Zahradníček worked as the CEO of TOUAX s.r.o., a producer and designer of modular buildings. In the 1990s, he held several management positions at PepsiCo and later was also in charge of DHL Logistics and Maersk Logistics in the Czech Republic.
