Record Low for ‘Bumped’ U.S. Passenger Numbers in 2017

The U.S Transportation Department has released 2017 figures for the number of passengers ‘bumped’ off flights, revealing a total of 23,223 passengers were forced off an aircraft or had their flights tickets revoked. This equates to a figure of approximately one passenger for every 29,000 travelers.
The biggest ‘culprit’ was Southwest Airlines, which accounted for approximately one third of all numbers at 8,279, while the airline with the highest rate was Spirit Airlines, with a rate of one bump per 12,000 passengers.
There has perhaps been greater focus on the practice of bumping passengers after an incident last April when a 69-year-old man was forcibly dragged off United Express flight 3411 in Chicago so that his seat could be taken by an employee of the United Airlines group. It has been a common practice for passengers to be bumped in favor of pilots and cabin crew who are transferring to another airport for work.
There has been a recent downward trend in the numbers of bumped passengers as a result of airlines’ proactive measures to avoid such situations, predominantly through offering substantial rewards and or benefits, usually in the form of travel vouchers, for passengers who voluntarily give up their seats or who have bought tickets on an oversubscribed flight.
After the United Express debacle, many airlines reviewed their bumping policies, with the likes of United, Delta, American and others providing airport agents with greater authority to offer even more-attractive bonuses to passengers who are asked to give up their seat. Delta Airlines was the biggest proponent of the reward system for passengers who voluntarily gave up their seats, the number totaling 28,331 for 2017.

CTT Systems announces first Cair™ VIP order for BBJ MAX 8

CTT SYSTEMS AB (CTT), a leader of aircraft humidity control systems, has announced launch customer order for a Cair™ VIP Inflight Humidification system from Jet Aviation for one Boeing BBJ MAX 8. This completion will feature increased humidity in the entire aircraft cabin which requires support from three humidifiers. This award is CTT Systems’ 86th VIP order for Airbus ACJs/Boeing BBJs. CTT’s humidifier maintains air humidity in the human comfort zone of approx. 20 percent Relative Humidity. A higher humidity on long-haul flights reduces dry air related problems (e.g. fatigue, jet-lag, red eyes, dry skin, spread of virus diseases) and improves wellbeing and sleep. The humidifier is based on evaporative cooling technology and uses a method that effectively precludes the transfer of bacteria. The Cair™ VIP IFH system offers total anti-condensation protection.

Rolls-Royce and Singapore Airlines sign Trent 1000 and Trent 700 contracts

Rolls-Royce has signed contracts with Singapore Airlines at the Singapore Airshow covering Trent 1000 and Trent 700 engines.
Singapore Airlines formally confirmed a US$1.7bn order for Trent 1000 engines to power 19 Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft, which will be covered by Rolls-Royce’s flagship TotalCare® engine support service. The order, originally announced in February 2017, was in addition to an order for Trent 1000 engines for 50 aircraft, made by SIA Group, in 2013.
The signing comes as the airline prepares for the entry into service of its first 787-10 aircraft powered by the latest version of the Trent 1000, the Trent 1000 TEN (Thrust, Efficiency, New Technology). Singapore Airlines also signed a contract for SelectCare™ support for Trent 700 engines that power 11 Airbus A330 aircraft.
SelectCare is a fixed price overhaul agreement that allows customers to benefit from Rolls-Royce’s engine health monitoring and aftermarket capability, while providing cost certainty and plan fleet servicing. It is one of a range of Rolls-Royce CareServices available through its CareStore.

Munich Public Prosecutor ends Eurofighter Austria investigation

The investigation of Airbus Defence and Space GmbH by the Munich Public Prosecutor (Staatsanwaltschaft München I) related to the sale of Eurofighter aircraft to the Republic of Austria in 2003 has been terminated. The result of the investigation by the Munich Public Prosecutor, which had been ongoing since 2012, did not confirm the allegations of bribery.
In order to conclude the investigation, the Munich Public Prosecutor has issued an administrative penalty notice against Airbus Defence and Space GmbH under the German Act on Administrative Misdemeanours (“Ordnungswidrigkeitengesetz”) amounting to €81.25 million. The total amount comprises an administrative fine of €250,000 and a disgorgement of €81 million. Airbus Defence and Space GmbH has accepted this notice.
The notice is based on the allegation of a negligent breach of supervisory duties of non-identified members of Airbus Defence and Space GmbH’s former management. The notice alleges that certain former management negligently failed to ensure proper internal controls that would have prevented employees from making payments to business partners without proven documented services in exchange.
On the other hand, the notice explicitly recognizes the major efforts undertaken by Airbus and its management since 2012, which have resulted in a new Compliance culture and a serious Compliance programme.
Since the beginning of the investigation, Airbus has fully cooperated with the Munich Public Prosecutor. This included the provision of an independent fact finding report of the law firm Clifford Chance, which Airbus shared with the Munich Public Prosecutor in 2014.

Liebherr-Aerospace receives order for Airbus Helicopters’ H160 heating valves

Liebherr-Aerospace Toulouse SAS, has been selected by Airbus Helicopters to supply the heating valves for its H160 helicopter program. Liebherr-Aerospace will not only develop, qualify and manufacture the environmental control system components, but the company will also service them.
Liebherr will supply two valves of the heating system that will be installed in the helicopter in order to provide hot air to the cabin, allowing to adjust the temperature inside the cabin and to demist the window panes of the helicopter.
Liebherr-Aerospace incorporated its latest innovations from the field of high-precision electro-mechanical controls into the design of the highly reliable heating valves. Made of light-weight aluminum, they contribute to the optimization of the helicopter’s operating costs.
The contract for the heating valves is the second order Liebherr-Aerospace received in the H160 program: in September 2012, the company was selected to supply the main rotor actuator for the medium twin-engine aircraft designed as the successor of the Dauphin helicopter. Moreover, Liebherr supplies flight control, landing gear and air management systems or components for almost all of Airbus Helicopters’ rotor wing families.
