In the wake of the Canadian plane and train makers announcement on November 8 and last weeks free cash flow forecast which sent Bombardier shares tumbling, it has been announced that 490 jobs of the 4,000-strong workforce based across four locations in Northern Ireland is to be cut.
|
The Belfast-based operation, previously known as Shorts, said it will speak with employees in more detail over the coming weeks to "explore opportunities to help mitigate the number of compulsory redundancies."
|
Wings for the A220 plane - formerly known as the Bombardier CSeries - are made at a factory in Belfast, which currently supports 1,000 jobs.
|
Bombardier is hoping to save up to US$250 million a year through “streamlining the company” with the shedding of 7% of its 70,000-strong global workforce over the next 12-18 months. Bombardier has operations in 28 different countries.

Oriens Aviation, the exclusive UK Pilatus Service Centre and sales distributor of the PC-12, is widening its expertise at its London Biggin Hill facilities to start offering EASA Pilatus PC-12 SET class rating pilot training from January 2019.

In a newly-ratified partnership with Jonathan Shooter’s Oysterair, who are a specialist Approved Training Organisation in high performance aeroplane training, trainees will cover EASA and FAA certified class rating courses – ground and flight instruction - at Oriens’ HQ.
|
The EASA PC-12 class rating course caters for a wide range of experience, from the PPL (A) holder with instrument rating and a minimum 200 flying hours’ experience with 70 hours Pilot in Command, to the most experienced pilots.
|
The move into flight training comes one year after Oriens launched Oriens Maintenance, acquiring the Avalon Aero facility at London Biggin Hill. The business is steadily growing and the business will be handling 20 PC-12s from next year, in addition to other business turboprops and Cessna Citation types.

ELTA Systems, a division and subsidiary of Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), has unveiled a new and enhanced configuration of its Drone Guard system which detects, identifies and disrupts the operation of UAS and small drones.
|
With hundreds of units already operational across the world, the new modular configuration has added a Communication Intelligence (COMINT) system for more precise detection, classification and identification based on broadcast frequency and unique communication protocol analysis and verification for neutralizing threats.

Furthermore, the Drone Guard's 3D Radars, Electro-Optical (EO), and Jammer systems have all been upgraded with bolstered capabilities.

Embraer has successfully completed the troop unloading, evacuation by hatch and evacuation tests through the front and rear doors of the KC-390 multi-mission medium airlift recently held at Brasília Air Force Base, in Brazil.
|
The tests complied with the requirements for achieving the Final Operational Capability (FOC), which is the subject of the final military certification of the aircraft, due to occur in the last quarter of 2019. The tests were supported by the Brazilian Air Force as well as the Brazilian Army and involved approximately 370 military personnel.

Embraer KC-390 is a tactical airlift designed to set new standards in its category while presenting the lowest life-cycle cost of the market. It can perform a variety of missions such as cargo and troop transport, troop and cargo air delivery, aerial refueling, search and rescue and forest fire fighting.

Luxair has selected Turbonycoil® 600, a synthetic standard turbine oil, to be used on its fleet of Boeing 737 New Generation and Bombardier Q400.
|
Luxair serves more than 60 destinations, mainly in Europe and North Africa. The Luxair airline’s current fleet includes 6 Boeing 737 NG (8 from 2019) aircraft powered by CFM56-7B engines and 11 Bombardier Dash 8 Q400 powered by PW150A engines.

In collaboration with Pratt & Whitney Canada and Bombardier, since 2017, Luxair's fleet Q400s have undergone a flight test campaign with the Turbonycoil® 600. This qualification will allow NYCO to grow its sales and increase its brand-awareness with regional airlines.

According to Airbus’ Global Market Forecast, unveiled at the Wings of the Future conference in Moscow, Russia and CIS’s airlines will need some 1220 new aircraft valued at US$175 billion in the upcoming 20 years (2018-2037). This means that the passenger fleet in the region will almost double from 857 aircraft in service today to over 1700 by 2037. Over the next 20 years, passenger traffic in Russia and CIS region will grow at the average rate of 4.1% annually with Russia being the major contributor to this growth. By 2037 the propensity for air travel in Russia will more than double.

In the Russia and CIS region, in the Small segment typically covering the space where most of today’s single-aisle aircraft compete, there is a requirement for 998 new passenger aircraft; In the Medium segment, for missions requiring additional capacity and range flexibility, represented by smaller widebodies and longer-range single-aisle aircraft, Airbus forecasts demand for 140 passenger aircraft. For additional capacity and range flexibility, in the Large segment where most A350s are present today, there is a need for 39 aircraft. In the Extra-Large segment, typically reflecting high capacity and long range missions by the largest aircraft types including the A350-1000 and the A380, Airbus forecasts demand for 44 passenger aircraft.

Airbus’ GMF foresees that in the next 20 years airlines in the Russia and CIS region will continue to renew their fleets by introducing more new fuel-efficient models, while gradually phasing out previous generation aircraft. The doubling in the fleet will require over 23,000 new pilots and 27,960 additional technical specialists.

The passenger traffic growth in terms of Revenue Passenger Kilometers (RPK) to, from and within the Russia & CIS region is forecast to increase at 4.1% per year on average over the next 20 years. The region’s highest traffic growth is expected to be on international routes to Latin America (+5.9%), AsiaPacific (+5.4%), Middle East (+5.1 %) and North America (+4.5%).

GOAL, German Operating Aircraft Leasing, has sold four Embraer E190-200 aircraft to US based lessor Regional One. The four aircraft are currently on operating leases to Air Europa, based in Majorca, Spain.
|
The aircraft were originally acquired by four GOAL special purpose companies from Air Europa in 2010 and 2011 with long term operating leases. The aircraft were held by private investors through public funds managed by GOAL and GOAL’s majority shareholder KGAL.
|
Petrus Aviation provided equity lease financing to Regional One through a special purpose entity owned by both companies.
|
GOAL is a joint venture of KGAL GmbH & Co. KG, one of Germany’s leading independent investment and asset managers with an investment volume of €22.7 billion and Deutsche Lufthansa AG, one of the world’s premier carriers. GOAL currently owns and manages 58 aircraft.

Cargo Aircraft Management, a subsidiary of Air Transport Services Group, has delivered a Boeing 767-200 converted freighter to SkyTaxi of Poland under a seven-year lease.
|
Cargo Aircraft Management also has granted SkyTaxi an option to lease a second Boeing 767-200 freighter for delivery in 2019.
|
SkyTaxi currently operates two Saab 340 aircraft from its home base at Copernicus Airport Warsaw.

Dowty Propellers, a manufacturer of aircraft propeller systems for both civil and military applications, has broken ground on its new manufacturing facility at Gloucester Business Park.
|
The facility in Hucclecote, Gloucestershire, includes manufacturing space and office accommodation. It will be the new business headquarters as well as the production and repair facility for Dowty employees in the UK, who are currently working out of interim facilities in the Gloucestershire area.
|
The facility will incorporate the latest ‘Brilliant Factory’ technology which equips machines with sensors, allowing data to be analysed in real time. The site is expected to be operationally ready by the end of 2019. Employees will progressively transfer to the new facility once it is operational.
|
In 2017, Dowty Propellers announced its commitment to continue operations in the Gloucester area following a fire that destroyed its operating headquarters and blade manufacturing facility in February 2015.
|
Dowty Propellers is also participating in a £20 million technology development project to deliver capabilities for both propeller systems and future propulsion systems. The project, Digital Propulsion, is match funded by the UK government and supported by the Aerospace Technology Institute with a grant of £9.5 million. Partners include the UK’s National Composites Centre, The University of Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre and the Manufacturing Technology Centre.

The project has completed the first of three years’ activity, and good progress has been made on defining the concepts that will deliver the project objectives, ultimately ensuring that the UK remains a leader in propeller system development and support.

West Star Aviation has announced the acquisition of Flite Components, an FAA/EASA Part 145 Repair Station. Conveniently located minutes away from Dallas Love Field airport, the company supports corporate and commercial aircraft operators, MROs and OEMs worldwide.
|
Flite Components specializes in aerostructure and composite repair in addition to the overhaul and repair of thrust reversers, control surfaces, engine cowls, engine inlets, pylon and floor panels, as well as radome repair and testing.
|
"We see great synergies between Flite and Dallas Aeronautical Services. I look forward to this partnership and growing the entire one-stop maintenance theme throughout our companies," said Jim Rankin, CEO of West Star Aviation.

Boeing has brought together the major fuselage sections to form the first 777X airplane that will take to the skies in 2019.
|
In a major production milestone called 'final body join,' Boeing teams connected the airplane's nose, mid and aft sections in the company's factory in Everett, Wash. The jet now measures 252 feet long (77 meters) from nose to tail, making it the longest passenger jet the manufacturer has ever produced.
|
The 777X builds on the market-leading 777 and the 787 Dreamliner to offer airlines the largest and most-efficient twin-engine jet in the world. The airplane provides 12 percent lower fuel consumption and 10 percent lower operating costs than competing airplanes.
|
The 777X achieves the unprecedented performance through the introduction of the latest technologies such as the most fuel-efficient commercial engine ever, the GE9X, and a fourth-generation all-new composite wing design that provides lift and efficiency. With the extension of a set of folding, raked wingtips, the airplane's wing spans 235 feet (72 meters).
|
By adding folding wingtips, the 777X's wingspan has been increased to enhance the aerodynamic efficiency of the wing, reducing engine thrust and fuel use. Additionally, the folding wingtips allow the 777X to maintain airport compatibility with the existing 777 family, adding value for customers.
|
The first 777X introduced will be the 777-9 model, which can seat 400 to 425 passengers in a standard configuration and offer a range of 7,600 nautical miles (14,075 km). Boeing is building on the passenger-preferred interior of today's 777 and building on 787 interior innovations to create a passenger experience like no other. Passengers will enjoy windows that are larger and located higher on the fuselage than the current 777, along with a wider cabin, new lighting and enhanced architecture.

The first 777X test airplane for static ground testing was completed in September 2018. Three additional flight test airplanes will be built after flight test #1.
|
The 777X first flight is scheduled for 2019. First delivery is slated for 2020.
|

Airbus has appointed Michael Schöllhorn as Chief Operating Officer (COO) for Airbus Commercial Aircraft, effective February 1, 2019 and Dominik Asam, to succeed Harald Wilhelm, as Chief Financial Officer (CFO) in April 2019.
|
Schöllhorn, currently COO for BSH Home Appliances GmbH in Munich, will succeed Tom Williams, who retires December 31, 2018 after 50 successful years in the aerospace industry, 19 of which were in top Airbus management positions.
|
Dominik Asam, currently CFO of Munich-based Infineon Technologies AG, will join Airbus on April 1, 2019, ensuring a smooth handover with Harald Wilhelm, who remains in charge in his current role until the Annual General Meeting on April 10, 2019.
