The Allegheny County Airport Authority Board of Directors has approved a visionary concept design for the US$1.1 billion Terminal Modernization Program at Pittsburgh International Airport.
|
The concept design for the new terminal to be built adjacent to the current Airside facility between Concourses C and D and scheduled to open in 2023, was unveiled to airport employees and the public on Wednesday, February 20.
|
It is based on a unique philosophy of nature, technology and community – NaTeCo – developed over the past seven months by the design team joint venture of architectural and engineering firms Gensler and HDR in association with luis vidal + architects.
|
The firms, which were awarded the design contract in July 2018, have been studying the Pittsburgh region and taking their inspiration directly from the rolling hills and rivers, neighborhoods and communities, and new economic diversity that has led to Pittsburgh’s re-emergence over the past few decades.
|
Specifics of the design for the new terminal that consolidates check-in, ticketing, security and baggage operations into one connected facility, including square footages, will continue to be refined over the next phase of the project – Schematic Design – which is expected to run through summer 2019.

Airbus has inaugurated a new training centre for commercial pilots and maintenance engineers in the National Capital Region of Delhi, as part of its continuing efforts to support the exponential growth of the civil aviation sector in the country.
|
Airbus forecast a need for more than 25,000 new pilots in India over the next 20 years to keep pace with the current double-digit growth in its commercial aviation industry.
|
The training centre incorporates an A320 flight simulator for full-flight simulation, along with programmes on aircraft procedure training, computer-based classroom training, and standard pilot transition training, including an ‘Upgrade to Command’ course aimed at improving skills and maturity of co-pilots as they transition to commandership. The facility will complement Airbus India’s training centre in Bengaluru which has trained more than 4,500 maintenance engineers since its inception in 2007.

Globally, Airbus has a comprehensive and highly customised training programme, aimed at pilots, maintenance crew and engineers. Its training facility in India is another testament to the company’s focus on making the most advanced training technologies accessible to the subcontinent while creating highly skilled workforce in line with the government’s ‘Skill India’ initiative.

GECAS has signed an agreement to lease three A320-200 aircraft to GetJet Airlines with all deliveries to take place in spring 2019. GetJet Airlines is an IOSA registered, well established Lithuanian ACMI and charter airline, which is headquartered in Vilnius.
|
“The addition of these new aircraft is an important step in our strategy to fill the gaps in the market and swiftly adjust to the current context of the rapidly changing aviation market,” said Aleksandr Celiadin, Executive Chairman of GetJet Airlines.
|
“Recent developments in our region have forced us to react quickly to satisfy growing passenger flows and support our wet lease customers and tour operators. Once the A320 are delivered, we will be operating a fleet of 15 aircraft – 7x A320s and 7x Boeing 737 classics, and our recently added wide-body Airbus A330. This larger fleet provides us with exciting opportunities to serve new clients and offer an expanded range of operations.”

Financial Products Group, the Tokyo-headquartered, listed independent financial services firm and FPG Amentum, the Dublin-based aircraft leasing/management company, have announced the acquisition of two Boeing 737 MAX8s.
|
The aircraft were acquired in Sale & Lease Back transactions and are on lease to subsidiaries of TUI Group.

Liebherr-Aerospace has inaugurated its new and bigger regional office in M.G. (Mahatma Gandhi) Road in Bangalore. The move had become necessary due to the company’s increase of activities and growth of the team on site. The office is proof of the aviation system supplier’s long-term strategy to enlarge its footprint in India.

The Liebherr-Aerospace team based in Bangalore is supporting Indian aircraft operators, manufacturers as well as suppliers and coordinates projects with the European-based OEM facilities Liebherr-Aerospace Lindenberg GmbH, Lindenberg (Germany), Liebherr’s center of excellence for flight control, actuation, gears, gearboxes and landing gear systems, and Liebherr-Aerospace Toulouse SAS, Toulouse (France), Liebherr’s center of excellence for air management systems.

MTU Aero Engines AG once again set new records in the financial year 2018. Revenues increased by 17% from €3,897.4 million in 2017 to a new high of €4,567.1 million. The group’s operating profit reached a new record level of €671.4 million, similarly beating the previous year’s result by 17 % (2017: €572.5 million). Net income also surpassed the previous record of €404.9 million, set in 2017, growing by 18% to €479.1 million.

MTU expects to generate revenues of around €4.7 billion in 2019. “All business units are geared for growth,” added CFO Peter Kameritsch. In 2019, the commercial series production business looks set to become the fastest growing segment with an organic revenue increase in the low teens. Revenue growth in the mid- to high-single-digit percentage range is projected for the spare parts business in 2019, while revenues in the military engine business are expected to grow by 10%. MTU’s revenue forecast for its commercial maintenance business is for an organic growth rate in the high-single-digit percentage range. MTU expects its EBIT margin adjusted to reach around 15.5% in 2019 (2018: 14.7%). Operating profit and net income adjusted are expected to increase in equal measure (EBIT adjusted, 2018: €671.4 million, net income adjusted, 2018: €479.1 million). The cash conversion rate, defined as the ratio between free cash flow and net income adjusted, is projected between 50 and 60% (2018: 42%).

Oriens Aviation has signed an agreement with Pilatus Aircraft to extend its exclusive UK and Ireland Authorised Pilatus Centre at London Biggin Hill Airport to the PC-24 Super Versatile Jet, effective immediately.
|
In readiness, it is ramping up tooling and sending engineers to Stans, Switzerland for training to add the twin-engined jet to its Part 145 MRO approvals. It expects to achieve this by the end of the third quarter.

Oriens’ announcement comes on the first anniversary of the business opening of its Authorised Pilatus Service Centre and a successful four years as the OEM’s representative, facilitating the introduction of 10 Pilatus PC-12s into service in its region.

Copa Airlines has selected GE Aviation's AirVault Digital Records Management System for its fleet of nearly 100 Boeing 737 and Embraer 190 aircraft.

Integration is currently taking place with Copa Airlines cross-fleet maintenance management system. The system enables connectivity between the airline's maintenance systems, with the capability of capturing the relevant data to connect with MRO's and lessors.

The AirVault records management system is a mission-critical, cloud-based electronic document management system designed to manage the digital content and bi-directional processes of aircraft maintenance records for the world's largest airlines. The system provides a comprehensive solution that digitizes, indexes and archives all airline record types.

Jet Aviation has acquired full ownership of the San Juan FBO at Luis Muñoz Marin International Airport in Puerto Rico, a provider of premium business aviation services at one of the most convenient U.S. points of entry for international flights.
|
Jet Aviation has been operating the San Juan FBO under a management agreement with the previous owner, Pazos, since March 2017, when the FBO was rebranded as Jet Aviation.
|
A new, larger hangar will open in the first quarter of 2019 to replace the one destroyed by the Hurricane Maria in 2017. The hangar – 20,000 ft² of hangar space and 2,500 ft² of office space – will offer customers parking facilities, refueling, third-party aircraft maintenance, meeting space, an executive passenger lounge, flight-planning workstations, and a pilots’ suite.

The San Juan FBO also includes a full-service, onsite U.S. Customs and Border Protection terminal to facilitate convenient customs, immigration and agriculture processing of international flights.
|
Hector Vasquez will continue in his role as FBO director and serve as general manager at San Juan. He has worked in FBO services for 34 years and was at Jet Aviation Teterboro for 26 years before moving to San Juan in 2018.

Aerospace Engineering Solutions (AES Global), a UK and EU aerospace design and certification organisation, has extended its operations and has opened an engineering design office in Shannon, Ireland.
|
To enhance this expansion, AES Global has gained EASA Part 21 approval for its Irish base, introducing DOA AES Global, trading under Aerospace Engineering Solutions.
|
The opening of its Shannon office signifies the continuation of the company’s growth plans in Ireland, providing local employment and adding engineering capabilities to meet with customer and
regulatory demands.
|
Throughout AES Global’s 20 year history to date, the company remains to be a reliable design and certification organisation for the local community of lessors and airlines, providing cost effective design solutions to the aerospace community. Large crowds gathered at Heathrow on February 19, to watch the much-anticipated arrival of a British Airways Boeing 747 painted in the iconic design of its predecessor British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC).
|
The aircraft entered the IAC paint bay at Dublin Airport on February 5 where it was stripped of its current British Airways Chatham Dockyard design before being repainted with the BOAC livery which adorned the BOAC fleet between 1964 and 1974.
|
Alex Cruz, British Airways’ Chairman and CEO, said: “The enormous interest we’ve had in this project demonstrates the attachment many people have to British Airways’ history. It’s something we are incredibly proud of, so in our centenary year it’s a pleasure to be celebrating our past while also looking to the future. We look forward to many more exciting moments like this as our
other aircraft with heritage designs enter service.”

From the paint bay at Dublin Airport, the BOAC Boeing 747 flew directly to Heathrow on the aptly named BA100 touching down on Tuesday morning. On Wednesday, February 20 it departed for New York JFK operating as flight BA117. This flight is particularly significant as it was the first route the B747 flew in BOAC colours.
|
After this, the aircraft will continue to fly British Airways’ 747-operated routes proudly showcasing the design as part of the airline’s centenary celebrations. The aircraft can be tracked using Flight Radar, which will feature a special image of the livery.
|
The BOAC livery will remain on the Boeing 747 until it retires in 2023, to allow as many customers as possible to have the chance to see it. By this time, British Airways will have retired the majority of its 747 fleet, replacing them with new state-of-the-art long-haul aircraft. This includes taking delivery of 18 A350s and 12 Boeing 787 Dreamliners in the next four years – which feature new
cabins and are more environmentally efficient – as well as another 26 short-haul aircraft, all part of the airline’s £6.5bn investment for customers.
