Boeing has confirmed that fixes to the anti-stall software system on its 737 MAX jet should now prevent any failures of the automated flight control system that kicks in if the jet senses its rate of climb could lead to a stall. While there are still no definitive answers to what caused the recent crashes involving Lion Air and an Ethiopian Airlines 737 MAX jets, information surrounding the two incidents is believed to indicate there were similarities in the aircraft’s behaviour immediately prior to each tragic event.

Boeing is currently under pressure from crash victims’ families, airlines, lawmakers in Washington and regulators around the world to prove that the automated flight control systems of its 737 Max aircraft are safe, and that pilots have the training required to override the system in an emergency. A Boeing official in Seattle said on Wednesday that the timing of the software upgrade was “100% independent of the timing of the Ethiopian accident”, and the company was taking steps to make the anti-stall system “more robust”.

With all 737 MAX jets still grounded worldwide, FAA approval of the fixes will still be required, along with adequate pilot training, before the plane will be cleared to take to the skies once again. The FAA said it had not yet reviewed or certified the upgrade. It has agreed to significantly improve its oversight of organisations certifying on its behalf by July, the US transport department’s inspector general, Calvin Scovel, told a Senate panel on Wednesday.

Allied Pilots Association said in a statement earlier on Wednesday that the certification process should not be rushed, the association, adding that the fix should be fully vetted and should take into account any further information from an investigation into the Ethiopian Airlines crash.

Leonardo has signed two new contracts in Europe in the airport logistics sector with a total value of over 100 million euros. The projects will see Baggage Handling Systems (BHS) revamped at Geneva Airport, the second biggest airport in Switzerland with over 17 million passengers annually, and at Athens International Airport. With annual traffic of over 24 million business and leisure passengers, Athens International Airport is the main gateway to Greece, serving the city of Athens since 2001.

In Geneva, the new sorting system will completely replace the existing facility at the end of 2023, in the meantime it will go into operation gradually during the implementation phase to ensure the continuity of airport operations. Leonardo will plan, design and deliver a brand new facility which will carry out all of the airport’s baggage handling, including at departures and arrivals, with a sorting capacity of over 5,200 bags per hour. Bags will be tracked with automatic label readers which can recognise both barcodes and printed characters. The project will include 8.5 km of conveyor belts, an Early Baggage System with a capacity of 2,400 bags, the entire control system which includes EasyAirport, Leonardo's Sorting Allocation Computer solution, and 2 MBHS® (Multi-sorting Baggage Handling System) cross-belt sorters.

In Athens, a new "Transfer Baggage Facility" will be constructed and baggage infrastructure throughout the rest of the airport will be completely overhauled and extended by 2020. Leonardo will be responsible for managing the entire project, from design to system integration, as well as for the supply of all equipment including sorting machines and IT systems. The project will see the existing North Baggage Hall handling system's electromechanical and IT components replaced to meet the latest security standards, improve reliability and expand capacity to more than 3,000 bags per hour. Leonardo’s solution includes a 240m MBHS® cross-belt sorter, more than 5 km of conveyors, check-ins and carousels. An option to implement the same modifications at the South Baggage Hall is included in the contract.

The newest member of GE’s CT7 engine family, the CT7-2F1, achieved type certification by the Federal Aviation Administration. This milestone is a big step forward for entry into service of the CT7-2F1-powered Bell 525 Relentless, the first fly-by-wire commercial helicopter, designed to operate safely and reliably in austere environments and with decreased pilot workload.

The CT7-2F1 engine incorporates the full heritage GE’s CT7/T700 engine family, with more than 100 million flight hours of experience on civil and military turboshaft and turboprop aircraft. The 2000 SHP-class turboshaft will provide the Bell 525 Relentless with up to 2129 SHP for
emergencies and 1979 SHP for takeoff.

All Nippon Airways (ANA), Japan’s largest airline has extended its existing multi-year Integrated Material Services (IMS) contract with Satair for its fleet of A320/321 CEO and NEO variants to include cover for its incoming fleet of three double-deck A380s, with the first entering service from May 2019.

The service from Satair commenced in December 2017 and includes planning, sourcing, purchasing, logistics and inventory management covering an extensive amount of part numbers for the A320/321 fleet. The coverage includes all expendables materials needs of ANA’s Airbus A380. A collaborative on-site team consisting of both Airbus/Satair and ANA staff working in one office have created a truly integrated and seamless operation to deliver the service. The additional A380 IMS service is a full-scope expendable materials solution covering all Line and ‘A’ checks and pre-loading for ‘C’ Checks.

Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), Israel's largest national military and civilian security defense company, has issued its consolidated financial statements for the year ended December 31, 2018.

IAI has recorded an annual increase of US$2.3 billion in order backlog, reaching a record scope of approximately US$13.5 billion at the end of 2018. The Company reported sales totaling USD$ 3.7 billion, representing a 5% increase in sales compared to last year, and a net loss of US$44 million.

The Company has cash balances in the aggregate of approximately US$1.5 billion and positive cash flows from operating activities totaling US$313 million.

WOW air, the Icelandic low-cost carrier, has been forced to cancel all flights with immediate effect after two potential investors have both walked away from negotiations to help rescue the cash-strapped carrier that flew 3.5 million passengers last year. For the past six months WOW air had been trying to negotiate a deal with rival airline Icelandair and also Indigo, an American private equity firm which has a stake in a number of airlines. The departure of both interested parties left WOW air struggling to organise a successful restructuring package with bondholders and other creditors.

Founded by Icelandic tech tycoon Skúli Mogensen, WOW air started flying in 2012 using smaller, single-aisle planes to fly between Iceland and many destinations in the US and Europe. However today’s news sees it now join a growing list of airlines which have fallen victim to high competition
and increased fuel costs, including airberlin, Monarch Airlines and Flybmi, while Norwegian recently launched an emergency US$350 million fundraising and Flybe was rescued by a consortium led by Virgin Atlantic in a cut-price deal.

The French group Sabena technics, an independent provider of aircraft maintenance and modifications (MRO), has acquired the assets of the company New EAS – now known as Sabena technics PGF – and thus reinforces its implantation and development on the European continent.
|
Based in Perpignan-Rivesaltes (France), the Group’s new site employs 165 people and has three hangars able to accommodate a wide-body aircraft and up to five narrow-body aircraft for civil and military base maintenance operations.
|

Nuremberg, Germany-based MRO, FAI Technik GmbH, part of the FAI Aviation Group, has selected Collins Aerospace’s latest VenueTM cabin management system and high definition entertainment system for its latest Bombardier BD700 Global Express cabin refurbishment project, named “Project
Pearl.”

Project Pearl represents one of the most extensive refurbishment projects for the type. The five month project will include 60, 120 and 240-month inspections and a full cabin refurbishment featuring the new Collins Aerospace Venue. Passengers can enjoy watching HD movies and listen to enhanced digital audio throughout the cabin. Venue can broadcast a range of other high-resolution content. The project also includes the installation of Honeywell´s Ka-Band broadband technology, delivering ultra-high-speed satellite connectivity.

Project Pearl is FAI´s sixth in-house Global Express cabin refurbishment and its third installation of Honeywell´s Ka-band technology on a BD700.
|
In January 2018, FAI Technik was appointed as an Authorized Dealer for Collins Aerospace avionics
