Over this last weekend, Turkish Airlines will have attempted a major relocation from its hub at Istanbul’s existing Atatürk airport to the new and highly publicized Istanbul airport located some
30km to the north of the Turkey’s largest city. While some other flights have already started to use the new airport, Turkish Airlines is the first of the major carriers to relocate. Other airlines will follow suit, but their relocation has been postponed owing to problems with logistics and they will
continue to operate out of Atatürk for the foreseeable future. The Turkish Airlines relocation involves the movement of an estimated 10,000 pieces of equipment, from planes to huge aircraft-towing vehicles to fragile security sensors.

Having pushed back the opening date three times, the Istanbul airport will have a fully operational main terminal and two runways, though critics of the new airport have expressed concerns that this
has been rushed and is only as a result of a dangerous schedule. When completed in 2027 at an estimated cost of US$6 billion, the airport will have six runways, four terminals and will be the busiest airport in the world at projected figures of 200 million passengers per annum. Currently Atatürk Airport is running at capacity with 100 million passengers per annum with no room to
build an additional runway to extend capacity.

The site of Istanbul Airport has raised considerable concern owing to its location, while the economic impact on a country is yet to be witnessed as many suspect that Turkey is on the brink of
financial collapse. It was originally intended that the airport would be built at a height of 105m above sea level owing to its location on wetland by the Black Sea, but this has subsequently been lowered to 60m to reduce costs. Aviation experts have insisted that the unstable ground, the local bird population and the Black Sea’s changeable weather – including strong winds and fog – pose a safety threat to air traffic.

Avion Express, one of the largest narrow-body ACMI operator, has launched the MPL Training Programme with its long-term partner BAA Training, one of the biggest independent aviation training centres in Europe.
|
The competency-focused MPL Training Programme, that is set to begin in August 2019, is based on a multi-crew training that imitates the actual cockpit experience working at the airline. It will cover all stages of pilot training, as well as integrate Avion Express procedures from the very first days. Thus, after completing the comprehensive training, the newly qualified pilots will be fully submerged in the company’s culture and ready to start flying right away.

Other than training under the multi-pilot cockpit conditions, the new MPL Training Programme will bring concrete job prospects and security, beneficial both for pilots and the airline. “Launching the Programme will mean that the pilots will be ready to take the First Officer seat in Avion Express aircraft immediately after the course completion. The comprehensive skills that they will receive
during the MPL Training Programme will bring the best efficiency to us as well as our clients," says Stasys.

BAA Training is a long-term partner of Avion Express. As part of this partnership, BAA Training has been providing the full-flight simulators for the pilot training of Avion Express. Additionally, the two companies created an Ab-Initio Cadet Programme for people with no flying experience and Type Rating Training Programme.

Volo Aero MRO, a privately held MRO provider for engine and accessory piece part repair, has been chosen by Rolls Royce for repair services on the AE3007 product line. As part of the organisations focus on supporting OEM’s repair needs, this is the first contract received for this product line. Over the last few years Volo Aero MRO has been growing its Rolls Royce capabilities primarily on the T56/D-22 product covering shafts, gears and wheels.

Recently Volo Aero MRO has added 4th axis CNC machining, large capacity vertical grinding and rubber repair capabilities to its portfolio. As the company improves its in-house capabilities to better fit the outsourcing needs in the civil and military aerospace markets, it forecasts a continuation of the growth already seen in 2018 and the first quarter of 2019.

At Aircraft Interiors in Hamburg, Bucher Group and Satair have signed an agreement for the supply of galley spare parts, thereby sealing the first collaborative agreement between the two companies. The contract is effective as of April 2019.

The Bucher Group is a Swiss based company with over 60 years of experience in the aircraft interiors business and a leading manufacturer of Galleys, Monuments and Medical Systems. Products and solutions produced by the Bucher Group are used for Airbus, Boeing, Pilatus and many other aircraft. Likewise, Satair has more than 60 years of experience within the aerospace aftermarket industry, making the company a world leader within the commercial aftermarket within parts distribution and services.

Ascent Aviation Services has announced that Scott Butler has joined the company as Chief Commercial Officer (CCO). In his new position Butler reports directly to Dave Querio, President, assuming responsibility for all Sales, Marketing and Customer Service functions. Butler and his team are also coordinating with the company's Operations group to ensure that all opportunities are thoroughly evaluated in order to effectively increase its volume of work. Butler and his team are in continued coordination with other Operational and Financial departments to ensure the continued efficient and productive growth of Ascent operations.

Butler holds a degree in Aviation Human Factors and Aerospace Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is also a licensed multi-engine commercial pilot. His management experience includes more than 10 years in the aerospace industry. Prior to joining Ascent Aviation Services, he was Director of Sales for Zodiac Aerospace. Throughout his broad tenure, Butler has held leadership positions in Program Management, Engineering and Operations Management at TE Connectivity, and Rockwell Collins.

IAG traffic in February increased by 6.3% versus the same period last year, while IAG capacity rose by 6.4%. The load factor for March was 79.6% compared to 79.7% the previous year.

After contracts for component support and A-Checks, French carrier XL Airways has now entrusted overhauls of its two CF6-80E1 powerplants to AFI KLM E&M.
|
The shop visits for the two XL Airways CF6-80E1 engines will be handled one after the other by teams at Amsterdam in the first quarter of 2019. During this period, the A330-303 will be equipped with a replacement powerplant provided by AFI KLM E&M. For the carrier, this was a strong argument as there is a shortage of this engine type on the market.

Boeing has delivered the first of three 787-10 airplanes to ANA (All Nippon Airways), the original launch customer of the 787 Dreamliner. With this milestone delivery, ANA becomes the first airline in Asia to operate the entire Dreamliner family.
|
As a stretch of the popular 787-9, the 787-10 carries a total of 330 seats in a standard two-class configuration, adding about 40 more passengers, while setting new benchmarks for fuel efficiency and operating economics with 25% better fuel per seat.

In March, Finnair carried 1,144,900 passengers, 4.6% more than in the corresponding period of 2018. The overall capacity increased in March by 11.0%. Finnair's traffic increased by 2.8% and the passenger load factor decreased year-on-year by 6.2% points to 78.3%. This is partly influenced by the timing of the Easter holiday, which is in April this year, whereas last year it was partly in March.

The Schaeffler Group is re-shaping its global corporate presentation and branding worldwide based on the Schaeffler corporate brand. The standardization of the corporate presentation is taking place as part of the Global Branding project, one of the initiatives that make up the program for the future “Agenda 4 plus One” with which Schaeffler is implementing its “Mobility for tomorrow”
strategy. By the end of the year, the unification will be completed at all of Schaeffler’s approximately 170 locations worldwide.

As a consequence of the changeover, the company names will also be changed accordingly. While individual Aerospace entities in Canada, Singapore, and the U.S. were already renamed in the last months, the German entity followed suit beginning of April. In this context, FAG Aerospace GmbH & Co. KG has been renamed Schaeffler Aerospace Germany GmbH & Co. KG.

Schaeffler Aerospace entities manufacture high-precision special bearing systems and precision components for aircraft engines, helicopters, the European Ariane launch vehicle, and for special fields of application with high performance requirements. Their worldwide customer base includes all well-known manufacturers of engines, helicopters, turbo pumps, and space systems.
